Acqua ca duna a tanti vadduna ...

Forte della saggezza antica di Sicilia, questo detto si traduce con: "l'acqua che alimenta molti torrenti non arriva mai a mare" oppure in un'altra versione "l'acqua che si perde per tanti valloni - cioè valli, canali - non arriva mai al mare".

Il significato è chiarissimo: se disperdi le forze in troppe direzioni non arriverai mai al risultato finale. Ma potrebbe anche essere letta con un altro significato: se sei troppo generoso e dai tutto a tutti, alla fine non resta nulla per te. In ogni caso ci invita a concentrarci su un solo obiettivo e su una sola missione. Vi pare poco, in un'epoca di superficialità?

Strong and wise, this old Sicilian saying can be translated into: "the water that fills many creeks will never get to the sea", or in a different vision "the water that gets lost through many canyons will never reach the sea".

The very clear meaning is: if you waste your energies on many things you will get no result, no goal, at all. Or, maybe: if you are too generous and give to too many people, you will have nothing left for yourself.

It invites you to think to one thing at the time and never lose concentration on your main goal, no matter what and no matter who. In a period of very superficial ways of living, this is quite great!

Duru cu duru ...

"Duru ccu duru... non fa muru" significa che se metti insieme due cose dure, solide, non costruisci un muro, anzi. Lo distruggi. 

Il detto si riferisce al fatto che quando due forti personalità si scontrano, o quando due persone testarde si impuntano sulle proprie posizioni, non si arriva a niente! E infatti è quasi sempre vero.

Noi siciliani condividiamo questo detto con i calabresi (che lo conoscono nella versione "duru ccu duru non fabbrica muru"), per lo stesso significato.

This Sicilian motto means "The hard one with the hard one won't make any wall". They will destroy it, instead! It refers to the situation of two strong characters trying to do things together, or to two stubborn people who get stuck on their positions, and of course nothing comes to them from that! This is mostly true, isn't it?

We Sicilians share this old saying with the people from the nearby Calabria - who tell it in a different way ("the hard one with the hard one won't build anything at all"), but for the same meaning. 

Proverbi siciliani: cosi longhi ...

"Cosi longhi addivèntunu serpi", significa secondo la saggezza popolare della nostra isola che le cose, le idee, i progetti, i lavori portati troppo per le lunghe finiscono per complicarsi, per fermarsi o per non realizzarsi mai. Lunghe come serpenti ma anche velenose come serpenti. Dunque... meglio agire presto. Chi ha tempo non aspetti tempo.

"Long things become snakes" is a Sicilian motto meaning that if you wait for too long in doing things - a plan, an idea, a specific work - those same things will get much more complicated. Or they will stop. Anyway, you will never ever complete or finish them. Long as snakes, and as dangerous too. So, act immediately. If you have time today, do not wait for tomorrow.

A pignata ca vugghi...

Dopo un po' di tempo tornano i nostri "proverbi siciliani" e tornano con un... avvertimento. A pignata ca vugghi, non ci 'ncugnunu muschi, cioè "alla pentola che bolle non si avvicinino le mosche". Il perché letterale è chiaro, ma il significato secondario è molto più raffinato: evitate di provocare chi è già arrabbiato per conto suo, non innervosite di più il nervoso. Soprattutto se questi è più grande e grosso di voi, piccole mosche!

Back to our Sicilian mottos, after the summer break. And there we go with a "warning": A pignata ca vugghi non ci 'ncugnunu muschi, that is "flies should not approach the pot's boiling water". The literal meaning is quite clear, so is it the secondary one: never EVER provoke someone who's already angry, never make a nervous person  more nervous! Especially if the person is big and strong and you are ... just a little fly!
