Radon, il "nemico" vulcanico - A volcanic enemy

Ha un nome da film dell'orrore... RADON😈...e fa paura perchè è un nemico silenzioso e cattivo. Non ha forma, nè colore, nè odore... arriva senza che te ne accorgi e ti può avvelenare. MA COS'E'? 

Si tratta di un gas radioattivo che viene generato silenziosamente da rocce che emanano particelle di uranio, come la roccia lavica. Dunque è un "nemico" che si trova spesso e volentieri a ridosso o ai piedi dei vulcani, ma anche nelle zone in cui le faglie tettoniche salgono in superficie. Ma se pensate che abbondi soltanto sull'Etna, sullo Stromboli o alle Hawaii... sappiate che potrete trovarne in quantità elevata anche nelle zone di vulcanismo antico (come le Alpi, per esempio!).

 L'Italia ne è piena, da nord a sud, e le popolazioni che abitano nei pressi di vulcani attivi ne sono esposte in abbondanza. Ma questo nemico che si insinua un po' dappertutto... è davvero imbattibile?

RADON, LE CATTIVE NOTIZIE 

Le cattive notizie sono poche, in verità: 

1) il radon "striscia" rasoterra quindi è facile respirarlo ai piani terra, ai primi piani, nei seminterrati e nelle cantine; 

2) se ci si espone continuamente al radon l'organismo si può "avvelenare"; 

3) il radon è una delle cause di tumori ai polmoni, dopo fumo e inquinamento da polveri sottili.

RADON, LE BUONE NOTIZIE 

La buona notizia è che se vi esponete al gas radon per pochi giorni soltanto, non rischiate nulla. Quindi non annullate le vostre vacanze in Sicilia o alle Hawaii! Non siete in pericolo!

1) il radon esce difficilmente in superficie e se succede avviene prevalentemente a ridosso di faglie tettoniche attive ma per fortuna basta spostarsi di 500 metri dalla faglia per essere già più al sicuro; 

2) se abitate ai piani bassi, basta aprire le finestre di casa ogni giorno per qualche ora, creando correnti d'aria, per liberare la casa dal radon presente in circolo;

3) creando direttamente dei sistemi di areazione e corrente tra fondamenta e pavimento il radon viene eliminato sul nascere, anche se dovesse emergere proprio sotto casa.

QUINDI NIENTE PAURA! IL NEMICO NON SI PUO' VEDERE NE' SENTIRE MA SI PUO' COMBATTERE A ANCHE BATTERE. 😉😉😉

It has a name straight out of a horror movie... RADON😈...and it's scary because it's a silent, evil enemy. It has no shape, nor color or smell... it arrives without you noticing and can poison you. BUT WHAT IS IT?

It's a radioactive gas silently generated by rocks that usually release uranium particles, such as lava rocks. So it's an "enemy" you often find near - or at the foot of - volcanoes, but also in areas where tectonic faults rise to the surface. If you think it's abundant only on Mount Etna, Stromboli, or Hawaii, though... you better know that you can also find it in high quantities in places of ancient volcanism (in the Alps, for example!).

Italy is full of it, from north to south, and the populations living near active volcanoes are much more exposed to it. But this enemy that creeps in everywhere... is it really unbeatable?

RADON, THE BAD NEWS

There's little bad news, about radon, actually:

1) Radon creeps along the ground, so it's easy to breathe it on ground floors, first floors, basements, and cellars;

2) If you're continuously exposed to radon, your body can become "poisoned";

3) Radon is one of the main causes of lung cancer, after smoking and particulate matter pollution.

RADON, THE GOOD NEWS

The good news is that if you're exposed to radon gas for just a few days, you're not at risk. So don't cancel your vacation to Sicily or Hawaii! You're not in danger!

1) Radon rarely reaches the surface, and if it does, it usually occurs near active tectonic faults. Fortunately, you only need to move 500 meters away from the fault to be safe;

2) If you live on the ground floor, simply open your windows for a few hours every day, so to create breezes and rid your home of circulating radon;

3) By directly building ventilation and draft systems between the foundation and the floor, radon will be eliminated before it starts entering your house, even if it emerges right under your feet!

SO, DON'T WORRY! THE "VOLCANIC ENEMY" CAN'T BE SEEN OR HEARD, BUT YOU CAN CERTAINLY FIGHT IT, AND EVEN ....WIN! 😉😉😉
