Punto più a ovest di Sicilia - Westernmost point of Sicily

A scuola ci insegnano che il punto più occidentale della Sicilia è il Capo Boeo (detto anche Capo Lilibeo) nel territorio di Marsala. E ancora una volta bisogna correggere questa informazione, sebbene il Capo Boeo sia effettivamente il punto più occidentale dell'isola maggiore. Se si considera però il territorio siciliano ... l'estensione più occidentale in assoluto è l'isoletta di Marettimo.

La più lontana del mini arcipelago delle Egadi, che rientra come giurisdizione nella provincia di Trapani, Marettimo è un punto di riferimento importante fin dal tempo delle guerre Puniche tra cartaginesi e romani. Oggi è una frazione del comune di Favignana e conta 684 abitanti stabili. Deve il suo romantico nome proprio ai romani che latinizzarono con "Maritima" l'antico appellativo greco di Hierà Nesòs (isola sacra) usando un termine più adatto al mare. 

Marettimo è l'isola delle grotte. Se ne trovano a decine disseminate prevalentemente sulle coste nord e ovest: Grotta Cammello, Grotta del Leone,  Grotta Bombarda, Grotta Presepe, Grotta Ficaredda, La Perciata, Mammarino ... Quest'ultima, situata sulla spiaggia di Cala Bianca, è proprio il punto più occidentale in assoluto del territorio siciliano! Si viene a Marettimo anche per fare immersioni subacquee, per fare trekking sulle alte colline rocciose, per ammirare le Case Romane e per rilassarsi tra i vicoli candidi del paesetto.

Da non perdere, naturalmente, i bellissimi tramonti che sugellano con i fatti la estrema "occidentalità" di questo fazzoletto di terra stupenda.

The furthest of the mini-archipelago of the Egadi Islands, belonging to the jurisdiction of the district of Trapani, Marettimo has been an important point of reference since the time of the Punic Wars between the Carthaginians and the Romans, over 2000 years ago. Today, it is a hamlet of the municipality of Favignana Island and has 684 permanent inhabitants. It owes its romantic name to the Romans, who latinized the ancient Greek name of Hierà Nesòs (sacred island) with "Maritima", thus using a term more suited to the sea.

Marettimo is the island of caves. There are dozens of them, scattered mainly along the north and west coasts: Grotto Cammello, Grotto Leone, Grotto Bombarda, Grotto Presepe, Grotto Ficaredda, La Perciata, Mammarino... . The latter, located on Cala Bianca beach, is the westernmost point of the westernmost point of Sicily! People also come to Marettimo to scuba dive, hike the high rocky hills, admire the Roman Houses, and relax in the whitewashed alleys of the village.

Of course, don't miss the beautiful sunsets that truly seal the extreme "Westernness" of this stunning piece of land.
