Il respiro freddo di Alicudi - Alicudi Island's cold breath

Come tutte le isole Eolie, anche Alicudi - la "sorella" più lontana, a occidente dell'arcipelago - è un vulcano. Anche se ormai spento da secoli, mostra ancora la forma e il fascino di questo tipo di montagne di fuoco e di fatto l'isola ne rappresenta solo la cima (il resto dell'edificio è sommerso per 1000 metri sott'acqua). Una terra nata dal fuoco quindi, e terra di calore e di sole per i pochissimi turisti e residenti che calpestano il suo suolo pietroso.

Pochi umani hanno il coraggio di arrivare e di vivere qui. Alicudi infatti è una gigantesca mulattiera. Non esistono strade, solo una lunghissima gradinata rocciosa che va dal porto di attracco fino alla cima del monte - chiamato Filo dell'Arpa, non per via dello strumento musicale ma del volo radente (a filo) del rapace poiana (in siciliano arcudaro: "arpazza"). Si sale a piedi, oppure con l'aiuto di asini e muli, se si devono trasportare bagagli pesanti. Non ci sono negozi, solo una bottega. Insomma, pochi agi e molti disagi. Immaginate adesso di salire su per gli oltre 300 gradini, sotto un sole cocente, magari in piena estate ... con una bottiglietta d'acqua comprata giù al porto che man mano si riscalda sempre più. Come trovare ristoro?

Grazie ai RAFFRISCATURI. Si tratta di un incredibile fenomeno naturale che si verifica qua e là lungo il perimetro dell'isoletta, per lo più a bassa quota. Da alcune spaccature del suolo, sai tombini, da sotto alcune rocce, dalle aperture di certe caverne vengono fuori correnti di aria piacevolmente fredda. Da dove arrivino non si sa... ed è qui che aleggia il mistero. Forse sono risucchi del movimento d'aria prodotto dalle onde, laddove si insinuano nel sottosuolo, generando appunto correnti fredde che poi sbucano dove possono. Certo è che la gente usa i RAFFRISCATURI per rinfrescare le abitazioni e per conservare alcuni cibi, con la funzione di un frigorifero naturale che non ha eguali al mondo. Non c'è modo migliore di godersi la sensazione di un "raffriscaturi" se non dopo aver fatto una bella immersione calda nelle pozze di acque sulfuree dell'isola... non a caso chiamate "Chiappe Lisce".😄😄

Like all the Aeolian islands, Alicudi - the more distant "sister" to the west of the archipelago - is also a volcano. Even though it has been extinguished for centuries, it still shows the shape and charm of this type of mountains of fire. In fact, the island represents only the top (the rest of the mountain's body is submerged 1000 meters underwater). A land born from fire therefore, and a land of heat and sun for the very few tourists and residents who dare to step on its stony soil.

Few humans have the courage to arrive and live there. In fact, Alicudi is a gigantic mule track. There are no roads, only a very long, rocky flight of steps that goes from the docking port to the top of the mountain - called Filo dell'Arpa, not because of the musical instrument harp but of the low flight (filo) of the buzzard bird (in Sicilian: "arpazza"). You climb on foot, or with the help of donkeys and mules, if you have to carry heavy luggage. There are no shops, just a grocery store. In short, few comforts and many inconveniences. Now, imagine climbing up the over 300 steps, under a scorching sun, perhaps in the middle of summer... with just a bottle of water you bought down at the port which gradually gets hotter and hotter. How to find refreshment?

Thanks to the RAFFRISCATURI (the coolers). This is an incredible natural phenomenon that occurs here and there along the perimeter of the island, mostly at low altitude. From some cracks in the ground, from manholes, from under some rocks, from the openings of certain caves, currents of pleasantly cold air come out. Where they come from is unknown... and this is where the mystery lingers. Perhaps they are just sucked-in movements of the air produced by the sea waves, when they insinuate themselves under the cliffs, generating cold underground currents that then emerge where they find space. What is certain is that people use these coolers to cool homes and to preserve some foods, with the function of a natural refrigerator that has no equal in the world. There is no better way to enjoy the sensation of "cooling off" with a RAFFRISCATURI than after having taken a nice hot dip in the pools of sulphurous waters on the island... not surprisingly called "Chiappe Lisce" (Smooth Butts)!
