Uno splendido lago chiamato Pozzillo - The lovely Lake Pozzillo

Il cuore della Sicilia ha anche un'anima blu, che "batte" dentro un bellissimo lago artificiale in provincia di Enna: il Lago Pozzillo. 

Situato tra i comuni di Regalbuto e di Agira, questo lago dalla forma allungata nasce grazie a una diga che sbarra il corso del fiume Salso Cimarosa - uno degli affluenti del Simeto, da non confondere con l'omonimo e più importante Salso Himera - allagando una piana circondata da morbide colline. Inizialmente la diga serviva per accumulare acqua da usare a scopo agricolo e per alimentare una centrale idroelettrica. Ma con il tempo il Lago Pozzillo è diventato anche una ambita meta turistica.

Anche se in estate la portata d'acqua diminuisce enormemente, in primavera e autunno ammirare il lago con le sue foreste di eucalipti lungo le sponde è un'emozione unica. Nel cuore dell'arida Sicilia, questa oasi di verde e di acqua ristora occhi e anima.

Il Lago Pozzillo si è formato negli anni Sessanta del secolo scorso quando la diga (costruita tra il 1950 e il 1959) è stata finalmente ultimata. Con una portata d'acqua di 150 milioni di metri cubi, una superficie di circa 8 km e una profondità di 51 metri, vanta il record di "più grande bacino artificiale della Sicilia". Il turismo lacustre si è sviluppato solo dalla fine degli anni Ottanta e oggi offre punti di ristoro, scuole di canottaggio, escursioni in quad o a piedi, agriturismi, centri sportivi e un parco avventura dedicato (vedi sito ufficiale dei territori del lago).

I comuni che si affacciano sul lago e che quindi godono del turismo intorno ad esso sono: Gagliano Castelferrato, Agira e Regalbuto. Tutti e tre sono centri di antica origine medievale, situati in cima a colline o rupi e quindi di fatto "lontani" dalle sponde del Lago Pozzillo. Ma direttamente collegati ad esso tramite i bellissimi panorami e le strade che lo raggiungono a valle. Per arrivare al lago da fuori provincia, percorrendo l'autostrada Catania-Palermo A19 si può uscire sia a Catenanuova sia ad Agira, proseguendo poi in direzione Regalbuto.

Il lago è troppo "moderno" per essere collegato a fantastiche storie di mistero. Ma nelle vicinanze, in contrata Musubacco, la voce popolare narra che... un giorno la figlia di un ricco signore espresse un desiderio magico secondo il quale tutto ciò che possedevano si trasformasse in oro puro. Cosa che avvenne nelle ore successive. La famiglia si ritrovò così immersa in tali e tanti tesori che dovette nasconderli tutti in una grotta. Anni dopo, un pastorello di passaggio da quella grotta - ormai invasa dai rovi - vi cercò dentro riparo. E trovò il tesoro. Ma stranamente di tutti quei preziosi decise di prendere solo due scarpette dorate, mettendole ai piedi al posto dei propri scarponi infangati. Quando cercò di uscire dalla grotta però ne rimase prigioniero per sempre... aveva infatti dimenticato la formula magica: "prendo pegno e poso pegno" con la quale accompagnare lo scambio. Ogni sette anni, il vitellino che il giovane pastore aveva con sé ritorna dal mondo dei morti e guida qualche esploratore alla scoperta del tesoro. Ma nessuno finora è riuscito a trovarlo ... perchè, affinché la magia si compia, si deve salire alla grotta a mezzanotte, portando un secchio pieno d'acqua ma senza farne cadere nemmeno una goccia! The heart of Sicily also has a blue soul, which "beats" inside a beautiful artificial lake in the district of Enna: Lake Pozzillo. 

Located between the municipalities of Regalbuto and Agira, this elongated lake was born thanks to a dam that blocks the course of the Salso Cimarosa creek - one of the tributaries of River Simeto, not to be confused with the homonymous and more important Salso Himera river - flooding a plain surrounded by round-shaped lovely hills. Initially the dam was used to accumulate water so to be used for agricultural purposes and to feed a hydroelectric plant. But over time, Lake Pozzillo has also become a popular tourist destination. Although in summer the water flow decreases enormously, in spring and autumn admiring the lake with its eucalyptus forests along the shores is a unique emotion. In the heart of dry Sicily, this oasis of greenery and water restores eyes and soul. 

Lake Pozzillo was formed in the 1960s when the dam (built between 1950 and 1959) was finally completed. With a water flow of 150 million cubic metres, a surface area of approximately 8 km and a depth of 51 metres, it holds the record for being "the largest artificial basin in Sicily". Lake tourism has only developed since the end of the 1980s and today it offers refreshment points, rowing schools, quad or walking excursions, holiday farms, sports centers and a dedicated adventure park (see the official site of the lake territories). The municipalities that overlook the lake and therefore live on tourism around it are: Gagliano Castelferrato, Agira and Regalbuto. All three have ancient medieval origin, are located on top of hills or cliffs and therefore quite "far" from the shores of Lake Pozzillo. But they are directly connected to it through the beautiful landscapes and the roads that reach it downstream. 

To get to the lake from outside the district, do drive along the A19 Catania-Palermo motorway, then exit at either Catenanuova or Agira, continuing in the direction of Regalbuto. 

The lake is too "modern" to be connected to fantastic mystery stories. But nearby, in hamlet Musubacco, the popular legend has it that... one day the daughter of a rich lord expressed a magical wish according to which everything they owned would be transformed into pure gold. Which happened in the following hours. The family found themselves so immersed in so many treasures that they had to hide them all in a cave. Years later, a shepherd boy passing by that cave - now overrun by thorns and plants - sought shelter inside. And he found the treasure. But strangely, of all those precious pieces he decided to take only two golden shoes, putting them on his feet instead of his own muddy boots. When he tried to get out of the cave, however, he remained a prisoner of it forever ... he had in fact forgotten the magic formula: "I take a piece and place a pawn" with which to accompany the exchange. Every seven years, the calf that the young shepherd had with him returns from the world of the dead and guides some explorers to discover the treasure. But no one has managed to find it, so far ... because, in order for the magic to happen, you have to climb up to the cave at midnight, carrying a bucket full of water but without letting even a drop fall!
