Rosa Fresca Aulentissima è l'unica opera poetica conosciuta dell'artista siciliano CIELO D'ALCAMO (conosciuto anche come Ciullo d'Alcamo). Vissuto certamente sotto il regno illuminato di Federico II di Svevia, questo poeta -il cui vero nome pare fosse MICHELE ALCAMO (Michele=Cheli=Cieli=Cielo)- aveva probabilmente conoscenze erudite, anche di latino e della nuova lingua italiana che si andava formando in Toscana, perché la lingua "volgare" con cui scrisse il suo poema mescola abilmente entrambe, ma con notevoli aggiunte dialettali locali. Nell'insieme aveva appena inventato la LINGUA SICILIANA anche se non lo sapeva...

Rosa Fresca Aulentissima parla del lungo corteggiamento di un cavaliere di umili origini verso una nobile dama che continua a scoraggiarlo. L'uomo arriva al punto di minacciare la donna (al tempo di Federico II vigeva una legge per cui se pagavi una sonora multa di 2000 agostari e inneggiavi all'impero ti veniva perdonato perfino lo stupro!) ma lei resiste e ad un certo punto lo manda a quel paese dicendo di andarsi a cercare una donna più bella di lei. Al che il cavaliere cede e dichiara che non ci sarà mai una rosa più bella di lei ....e questo porta la nobile signora ad innamorarsi follemente.

E' simpatico sapere che anche una delle nuove canzoni moderne in lingua siciliana ("Mokarta" cantata dai Kunsertu) è dedicata a una ragazza che si chiama Rosa.

Rosa Fresca Aulentissima  (Fresh Perfumed Rose) is the only known poetic work written by the Sicilian writer CIELO D'ALCAMO (also known as Ciullo d'Alcamo). He certainly lived under the enlightened reign of Frederick II of Swabia, and his real name seems to have been MICHELE ALCAMO. The natural changes given by the local dialect though turned the name Michele (Michael) into Cheli  or Cieli or Cielo, which is the Italian word for "sky". Cielo d'Alcamo probably had a good education, he knew Latin of course but also the new vulgar language, Italian, that was spreading around from Tuscany.  The language he used, though, skilfully mixed Latin, Italian and some typical local sayings. As a whole he had just invented the SICILIAN LANGUAGE even if he did not know it yet...

Rosa Fresca Aulentissima tells about the long courtship of a knight of humble origins towards a noble lady who continues to discourage him. The man reaches the point of threatening the woman (at the time of Frederick II there was a law whereby if you paid a fine of 2,000 Agostaris and praised the empire you were even forgiven rape!). But the lady resists and at some point she gets rid of the bothering knight, by telling him: "Go and look for a woman more beautiful than me!". The knight yields and declares that there will never be a rose more beautiful than her ... and this leads the noble lady to  madly fall in love with him, at last!

It 's nice to know that even one of the new modern songs in Sicilian ("Mokarta" sung by Kunsertu) is dedicated to a girl called Rosa.
