A pochi chilometri dal paese di Sambuca di Sicilia (di cui parleremo in seguito) sorge il LAGO ARANCIO, un bacino artificiale costruito nel secondo dopoguerra sbarrando il corso del fiume Carboj. Siamo in provincia di Agrigento, quasi al confine con Trapani, in un'area che nel periodo della dominazione Araba fu un centro di enorme interesse economico e militare, tanto che proprio in questa valle sul corso del Carboj sorgeva un fortino chiamato MAZZALLAKKAR ...nome certamente saraceno ma sul cui significato non si sa ad oggi nulla. Il fortino risale probabilmente agli anni successivi all' 830, quando nasceva già l'abitato di Sambuca e bisognava difenderlo dagli attacchi provenienti dall'interno dell'isola. Nonostante i tanti anni e le avversità, naturali e umane, subite il fortino era ancora in ottime condizioni nel 1949, quando iniziò la costruzione della diga. Era usato dai pastori locali come rifugio per pecore e mucche e di conseguenza ben curato. La costruzione della diga causò l'allagamento della vallata e di conseguenza il fortino Mazzallakkar venne del tutto sommerso dalle acque. Ancora oggi, esso conserva la forma originaria... quadrangolare con una torre rotonda ad ogni angolo ... ed è possibile vedere su alcune di esse i resti di una copertura cuspidata con un simbolo che forse un tempo era una mezzaluna. Mazzallakkar rimane a "dormire" sotto l'acqua per quasi tutto l'anno, ma durante l'estate - tra giugno e settembre- a causa del caldo che riduce la portata d'acqua del lago riemerge in parte e si lascia ammirare da turisti e curiosi in tutto il suo antico splendore... Poi, alle prime piogge autunnali, tornerà a nascondersi sotto la sicura "coperta" del lago. Insieme ai suoi fantasmi saraceni.
A few kilometres away from the town of Sambuca di Sicilia (which we will describe in one of the next articles) there is the ORANGE LAKE, an artificial basin built in the post-Second World War period by stopping the course of the Carboj River. We are in the province of Agrigento, near the border with Trapani, in an area that during the Arab times was a centre of great economic and military interest, in fact in this valley -right on the course of Carboj River- was built a fortress called MAZZALLAKKAR ... (a certainly Arabic name but on whose meaning we know nothing up to now). The fortress probably dates back to the 830s, when Sambuca was already inhabited and had to be defended by attacks from the interior of the island. Despite so many years and natural and human adversities, the fortress was still in excellent conditions in 1949, when the construction of the dam began. It was used by local shepherds as shelter for sheeps and cows and therefore they took good care of it. The dam that stopped the Carboj River caused the flooding of the valley and consequently Mazzallakkar was completely submerged by the water. Even today it preserves the original shape ... quadrangular with a round tower at each corner ... and it is possible to see the remains of a cusp cover with a symbol that once used to be a crescent moon. Mazzallakkar remains "asleep" under the water for almost all the year, but during the summer - between June and September - due to the heat that reduces the lake's water capacity, it partly re-emerges and let tourists and curious visitors admire its ancient splendor ... Then, as the early autumn rains come, it will hide again under the "blanket" of the lake, along with its Saracen ghosts.
