Le Nove Aci - Lands of Aci

In the beginning, at the time of the Greeks, there was only one seaside fishing village called Akis-

Xiphonia. The small town became more important during Roman times, thanks to the exploitation of thermal waters and trade by sea. It was called Aquis precisely because of the volcanic waters that allowed wellness treatments but also clay and terracotta processing. Handicrafts and trade were the first activities, in particular trade intensified during the Middle Ages. At that time it was the Norman lava castle (12th century) that became the center of the land of Aquis, which in the meantime became Aquilia. But it also became the main target of the pirates who attacked the coasts from the sea. It was for this reason that some inhabitants preferred to escape to the plateau, abandoning the cliffs.

They founded the town of Aquilia Nuova which, thanks to its dominant and well protected position, developed faster than the other villages around. In the 17th century the city of Aqulia Nuova had become Aci and had grown to such an extent that it had extensions both in the hills and on the coast. Each neighborhood was headed by a noble family and often these people were in dispute with each other. The most serious dispute saw the smaller villages of Aci separate from the historic center due to different political views. The center then became Aci Reale, as it remained faithful to the sovereign. The other hamlets developed independently, with different names each. After the severe earthquake of 1693, which razed almost all of Eastern Sicily to the ground, Aci territories revived according to different characteristics. Characteristics that have been transmitted to us today.

ACIREALE - is the ancient center of the Acis and is still today the largest of the "nine sisters" and the most populous. It has a wonderful Baroque core that sees the three seventeenth-century basilicas stand out (cathedral of the Announciation, St Pietro and Paolo, St Sebastiano), the town hall, the palaces of the ancient barons, the artistic squares and alleys where churches and chapels emerge from time to time. Acireale is connected to the sea thanks to a pedestrian street of the 16th century that from the city reaches the village of Santa Maria La Scala along a splendid natural reserve of Mediterranean scrub. Acireale is a city that today thrives on tourism, crafts and trade in agricultural and fish goods.

ACI PLATANI - hamlet of the municipality of Acireale, still retains the pale memory of the ancient peasant soul visible in a delightful museum and in the church dedicated to  Our Lady f Carmel.

ACI CATENA - second large center of the Acis, owes its name to the devotion to Saint Mary of the Chain (Catena) to whom the main church is dedicated. Aci Catena is the center of the processing of the green lemons and also the heart of the thermal springs, although the establishments are located in the Acireale area.

ACI SAN FILIPPO - is a hamlet of Aci Catena. The village, now completely modern, is gathered around a majestic church of the 16th century which boasts the title of "first parish church of the Acis".

(ACI) SANTA LUCIA -
once a hamlet of Aci Catena, today it has been absorbed by the center and has become a neighbourhood, losing the name of "aci". It dominates the town from the top of a hill with the beautiful church of St Lucia that stands out on top of the lava staircase.

ACI SANT'ANTONIO - is a hill town  gathered around three beautiful seventeenth-century churches. Here the art of building and decorating Sicilian carts is still very much alive with a museum that also tells tourists about it.

ACICASTELLO - the Norman town still extends along the coast between Acireale and Catania, around the ancient lava castle which today is a historical and botanical museum. It is really worth going up to admire the garden of Mediterranean plants located on its terrace from which you can enjoy a unique view.

ACI TREZZA - the famous village of the "Malavoglia" novel by Giovanni Verga today is a hamlet of Acicastello. Tourists love strolling along the seafront, admiring the small church of St John Battista, the museum of the "Casa del Nespolo" and the ancient Rodolico shipyard where boats are still built by craftsmen who just use their strong hands.

ACI BONACCORSI - immersed in the greenery of dozens of flower gardens, Aci Bonaccorsi is a small pearl. A clean, quiet, tidy village with an imposing church overlooking airy squares and the ancient palace of the local lord. The locals define it as a "small Swiss village" because of its orderly perfection which makes it truly unique in the Catania area landscape.
