"Di quattro cose non devi mai fidarti: sereno d'inverno, pioggia d'estate, pianto di donna e beneficenza di frate" --- uno dei proverbi più cinici che abbiamo in Sicilia, ma che sintetizza in modo magistrale la classica diffidenza della nostra gente. I siciliani solo in apparenza sono ospitali e aperti. O meglio, è vero che accolgono l'ospite con rispetto e simpatia, ma nel frattempo se lo studiano per bene. Sempre! E sospettano sempre che l'inganno sia dietro l'angolo ... come un cielo sereno d'inverno che poi ti inganna con un temporale improvviso, come una donna che piange per ottenere quel che vuole, come un prete che ti fa la beneficenza e magari poi vuole qualcosa in cambio...
"Four things you must never trust: serene in winter, summer rain, a woman's cry and charity of friars" --- one of the most cynical proverbs we have in Sicily, but summarizes magically the classic mistrust of our people. Sicilians seemingly are hospitable and open to other people .... they do welcome the guest with respect and sympathy, but in the meantime they will study him carefully. All the time! And they always suspect that deception is around the corner ... like a clear winter sky that then tricks you with a sudden storm, like a woman crying to get what she wants, like a priest who makes charity and maybe he wants something in return ...
