Occhi ca lùciunu! The poetry of Sicilian language

La lingua siciliana contiene in sé una poesia, sia in positivo che in negativo, che la rende simile a una canzone, anche quando la gente parla di banalità. Ci sono espressioni che riempiono di colore la giornata, come pochi altri idiomi al mondo riescono a fare. Sono frasi ereditate dai greci, dagli arabi, dai francesi ... che vanno conservate perchè davvero patrimonio inestimabile di un passato splendente. Eccone alcuni esempi:

UNNI TI LUCIUNU L'OCCHI (dove brillano i tuoi occhi) ---per dire DOVE SEI?

MI FA SANGU  (mi fa bollire il sangue)                      --------per dire MI ECCITA

SCIATU DI LU ME CORI (respiro del mio cuore)     -------- per dire MIO CARO, MIO AMATO

ma il colore di questa poesia lo sentiamo anche nelle frasi negative, o in quelle buffe, o nelle prese in giro.

Un siciliano non dirà mai "assolutamente no!", vi dirà MANCU 'LI CANI (nemmeno i cani), non vi dirà mai che sta soffrendo la fame, al massimo vi dirà CA ALLICCA A SARDA (lecca la sardina) e se invece lo avete fatto arrabbiare vi avvertirà che SCIPPI I CORPA (mi strappi le botte da dentro ... me li fai scappare proprio tu, gli schiaffi, anche se io non vorrei picchiarti). E se qualcosa ha un colore indefinibile si dice CULURI CANI CA FUI (color cane che corre)... provate un po' a capire che colore ha un cane in corsa!!! 

Le espressioni più belle, secondo me, sono quella usata per dire "capirsi, comprendersi, essere in sintonia" e che si traduce con SAPIRINI SENTIRI (sapersi ascoltare) e quella usata quando si ha un grande desiderio dentro, o quando si aspetta una cosa da lunghissimo tempo: MI NESCI U CORI (mi esce fuori il cuore).

"Mi nesci u cori vidiriti mmaritata" (non vedo l'ora di vederti sposata)

"Mi nesci u cori ca mi vasi"          (vorrei tanto che mi baciassi)

Ed è un peccato che sia troppo poco il tempo e lo spazio, qui, per scrivere altre mille espressioni come queste...

The Sicilian language sounds like poetry, both in positive and in negative things. It sounds like a song even when the people speak of normal, everyday events. There are words and sentences that bring colours in everyday life and they come from Greeks, Arabs, French ... Some examples are:

UNNI TI LUCIUNU L'OCCHI (where do your eyes shine) ---meaning "where are you"?

MI FA SANGU  (make my blood boil)                      --------meaning "exciting"

SCIATU DI LU ME CORI (breath of my heart)   -------- meaning "my loved one, my dear"

but the "colour" of this poetry is also in negative or funny words, in jokes or stupid sentences.

A Sicilian will never say "absolutely NO!" he will say MANCU LI CANI (not even dogs), he will never say he's starving he will say ALLICCA A SARDA (licking anchovy) and if he's very upset he will tell you you're going to SCIPPARI CORPA (you really take the punches out of me). And when something has a really strange colour a Sicilian will say CULURI CANI CA FUI (running dog colour).... try to guess what colour is a dog while it's running!

In my opinion, the most beautiful sentences are the one used to say "understand" , SAPIRINI SENTIRI (I can listen to you) and the one used to express a great wish, a desire about something very rare: MI NESCI U CORI (my heart goes out).
