Questo bambino nella foto ha uno sguardo molto siciliano. Occhi neri, profondi, mediterranei che oggi - addolciti dagli anni e dalla sapienza - guardano il mondo dal volto saggio di.... Papa Leone XIV. Il primo papa statunitense, che di americano ha poco e nulla, ha sempre dichiarato di avere "origini italiane" tra le tante che compongono il mix del suo albero familiare (ha anche origini francesi e afro-haitiane). Ed è proprio la sua parte italiana quella che ci interessa.
Le radici di Papa Leone XIV affondano nel tempo fino al lontanissimo 24 giugno 1876 quando, nel paese di Milazzo (provincia di Messina) veniva al mondo il suo bisnonno Salvatore Giovanni Gaetano RIGGITANO. Dei primi anni di questo bisnonno siciliano si sa poco, alcuni dicono che si fosse sposato giovanissimo, poco prima di emigrare - per lavoro - in Francia... secondo altre versioni non era sposato, quando lasciò la Sicilia. Certamente si sa, con sicurezza, che in Francia incontrò Susanne Fontaine, se ne innamorò e andò a vivere con lei... ma senza sposarla. Forse fu questa condizione di "conviventi peccatori" o forse - se era davvero già sposato, in Sicilia - la condizione più grave di "adulteri", che mise i due in grande difficoltà. In Europa non potevano più vivere, così decisero di emigrare negli Stati Uniti.
L'America era meno severa con le coppie "irregolari" ma non per questo le accettava. Anche negli USA, una coppia non sposata creava sospetti e poteva avere problemi legali, per questo i due si imbarcarono sulla nave usando entrambi un nome falso - PREVOST - derivato da quello di un parente lontano di Susanne Fontaine. L'urgenza di cambiare totalmente il cognome fa pensare che forse davvero l'antenato del papa fosse un adultero e che in Sicilia abbia lasciato una moglie o addirittura una famiglia in attesa. Ma questa cosa non si saprà mai con certezza ... perchè poi, arrivati negli Stati Uniti, i Prevost rimasero Prevost per sempre. I due figli nati dalla coppia fecero la loro vita, prima in Louisiana e poi a Chicago, e uno di essi - il nonno del papa - sposò una donna meticcia discendente da una famiglia afro-caraibica.
Robert Francis Prevost - papa Leone XIV - ha dunque il sangue ricchissimo di chi mescola in sé molteplici culture, nazioni e continenti. E addirittura due razze diverse! Eppure a noi piace sentire quella lontana eco siciliana ... e immaginare che oggi, qualche Riggitano di Milazzo possa ancora riconoscersi "parente alla lontanissima" di uno dei papi più affascinanti della storia!

Pope Leo XIV. The first US-born pope—who otherwise has little to nothing of the "American" type —has always declared that he has "Italian origins" among the many strands making up his family tree (he also has French and Afro-Haitian roots). And it is precisely his Italian side that seems very interesting, here.
Pope Leo XIV’s roots go back to June 24, 1876, when his great-grandfather, Salvatore Giovanni Gaetano Riggitano, was born in the town of Milazzo (in the district of Messina, Sicily). Little is known about this Sicilian great-grandfather's early years; some say he married at a very young age, just before emigrating to France looking for a job, while other accounts claim he was unmarried when he left Sicily. What is certain is that in France he met Susanne Fontaine, fell in love with her, and moved in with her—without marrying her. Perhaps it was their status as "cohabiting sinners"—or, if he was indeed already married back in Sicily, the more serious charge of "adultery"—that caused them such great difficulty. Unable to continue living in Europe, they decided to emigrate to the United States.
America was less strict regarding "irregular" couples, though it did not necessarily accept them. Even in the US, an unmarried couple aroused suspicion and could face legal trouble; for this reason, the pair boarded their ship using a false surname—Prevost—derived from a distant relative of Susanne Fontaine. The urgent need to completely change their surnames suggests that the Pope's ancestor may have been an adulterer who left behind a wife, or even a family, back in Sicily. But this will never be known for certain... because once they arrived in the United States, the Prevosts remained Prevosts forever. The couple's two children built their lives—first in Louisiana and later in Chicago—and one of them (the Pope's grandfather) married a woman of mixed heritage descending from an Afro-Caribbean family.
Robert Francis Prevost—Pope Leo XIV—thus possesses the rich heritage of someone who embodies a blend of multiple cultures, nations, and continents. And even two different races! Yet, we love to hear that distant Sicilian echo... and to imagine that, today, some Riggitanos resident in the Milazzo area might still recognize themselves as a "very distant relative" of one of history's most fascinating popes!
