Quando entra il mese di dicembre, in Sicilia cominciano a svolgersi decine di tradizioni religiose affascinanti, spesso legate a doppio filo a rituali pagani contadini. Il fuoco è un elemento che si ritrova ovunque e che segna, da un lato, il bisogno di luce nel freddo inverno e dall'altro la consapevolezza che la stagione più buia ci conduce, lentamente, verso un nuovo allungamento delle giornate. Il fuoco è anche il simbolo del martirio e della purificazione ed è il simbolo della luce, di Lucia, la santa cattolica che domina il periodo.
Santa Lucia è molto amata e celebrata, in Sicilia. E non solo perchè era di origine siciliana (siracusana) ma anche per i tanti miracoli che qui le sono attribuiti.
Nella tradizione di Realmonte (Agrigento), la festa di Santa Lucia è legata al fuoco. Nella città famosa nel mondo per le bianche scogliere della Scala dei Turchi, tra il 12 e il 16 dicembre vengono elevati alla santa patrona diversi rituali. Il più bello è sicuramente quello delle "luminarie", i falò votivi. Già dalla sera del 12, davanti alle chiese, nelle piazze centrali dei quartieri e davanti alle case vengono accesi diversi fuochi. Ciò fa sì che, visto da lontano, l'intero paese sembri divorato da un grosso incendio! Una suggestione meravigliosa che illumina l'oscura campagna agrigentina.
Intorno a quei fuochi, la gente si raduna per pregare o per cantare. Le massaie, sul fuoco, preparano il dolce tradizionale: la cuccìa (frumento bollito, condito poi con zucchero e miele). Il tutto in attesa del giorno della grande celebrazione, il 13, che verrà poi seguito da altri riti fino al rientro della santa in chiesa.

Santa Lucia (Saint Lucy) is much loved and celebrated in Sicily. And not only because she also was Sicilian (from Syracuse) but for the many miracles that are attributed to her.
In the tradition of Realmonte (Agrigento), the feast of Saint Lucy is linked to fire. In the city famous throughout the world for the white cliffs of the Scala dei Turchi, they organize various rituals in honor of the patron saint between 12 and 16 December. The most beautiful is certainly the ritual of the "Luminarie", the votive bonfires. Starting with the evening of the 12th, various fires are lit in front of the churches, in the central squares of the neighborhoods and in front of the houses. Seen from a distance, the whole village seems devoured by a huge fire, but there is no danger at all! It is just a wonderful suggestion that illuminates the dark countryside around Agrigento.
People gather around the bonfires to pray or to sing. The housewives prepare the traditional dessert: the cuccìa (boiled wheat, then seasoned with sugar and honey). All this in anticipation of the day of the great celebration, December 13th, which will then be followed by other rites until the saint returns to her church.
