La Madonna detta "Odigitria" (dal greco antico ὸδηγήτρια, colei che istruisce, che mostra la direzione) è un simbolo molto importante per la Sicilia. Questa raffigurazione di Maria che tiene in braccio il piccolo Gesù, invitando i fedeli a seguire Lui che è la "via" appare per la prima volta intorno al V secolo dopo Cristo nella Chiesa d'Oriente, a Costantinopoli. Si rifà, secondo il detto popolare, a una reliquia dipinta dalla mano dell'evangelista Luca in persona e dal mondo bizantino venne portata in Sicilia durante l'era di quella dominazione. Fin da allora molte chiese dell'isola sono state dedicate alla "Odigitria" o comunque alla figura della Vergine Maria, sebbene il culto si rafforzò solo nel VII secolo, quando alcuni soldati siciliani di ritorno da una Crociata contro i turchi raccontarono di aver vinto contro una flotta di 800 navi "grazie alla immagine della Madonna Odigitria portata in processione a Costantinopoli".
Maria Odigitria è la patrona protettrice dell'intera isola e del popolo siciliano, tanto che a Roma esiste una chiesa (del 1594) denominata "Chiesa Nazionale dei Siciliani di Roma" o anche "Santa Maria dei Siciliani". A lei furono dedicate molte preghiere, tra le più belle ricordiamo quella del vescovo di Acireale, Salvatore Russo, che nel 1944 scrisse l'inno che fu adottato anche dall'allora esercito indipendentista, il che rende l'Odigitria anche "patrona degli indipendentisti siciliani"!
Preghiera di S.E. Salvatore Russo alla Odigitria
"O Vergine Santa, che volgi lo sguardo sulle guerre e dai la pace, che stendi la mano e sollevi chi cade, che appari e disperdi le ombre, proteggi la Sicilia. Madre di Dio, sii madre nostra. Sii con noi, o Maria, in quest'ora di universale distruzione, di sangue che trabocca e straripa, di dissoluzione che travolge. Resta con noi, nella Terra che ami, che è tua: che ti salutò e t'invocò Regina nelle lotte, dure e cruente, per la fede e per la Patria. Benedici la Sicilia, quest'isola ferace, madre di Santi, di martiri, di pontefici, di vergini, di eroi. Abbiamo bisogno di te, oggi, più che mai. Nello smarrimento che scombuia le menti, nel disordine che travaglia le genti, nello scompiglio che imperversa sul mondo, reggi il nostro Popolo, sii nostra Stella. Ravviva la fede, infondi in noi energie di resistenza, di carità e di giustizia. Segnaci la via che abbiamo da seguire e guida la Sicilia nostra agli alti destini a cui la storia secolare la sospinge, a cui Dio la chiama"
The Virgin called "Hodegetria" (from the ancient greek word ὸδηγήτρια, "the one who helps") is a very important symbol for Sicily. This depiction of Mary holding the infant Jesus in her arms, inviting the people to follow Him who is the "way", appeared for the first time around the 5th century AD in the Church of Constantinople. According to the popular saying, it is a copy of a relic painted by the Evangelist Luke himself with the portrait of the Mother of Jesus. It probably arrived in Sicily during the Byzantine domination. Since then, many churches on the island were devoted to the "Hodegetria" or however to the figure of the Virgin Mary, although the cult was only strengthened in the 7th century, when some Sicilian soldiers returning from a Crusade against the Turks reported how they had won against a fleet of 800 ships, "thanks to the image of the Madonna Odigitria carried in procession to Constantinople."
Mary Hodegetria is the patron and protector of the island and of the Sicilian people, in fact there is a church in Rome (dated 1594) called "National Church of the Sicilians in Rome" or "Holy Mary of the Sicilians." Many prayers were devoted to her, among the most beautiful ones we remember that of the Bishop of Acireale, Salvatore Russo, who in 1944 wrote the hymn which was also adopted by the local Sicilian Independent Army, making the Hodegetria also the "patron of the Sicilian independentists "!
