An.Tu.Do --- the Sicilian revolution

Nella primavera del 1282, nella Sicilia dominata dai francesi Anjou, a Palermo avvenne un fatto in apparenza banale. Un ufficiale francese si rivolse in modo audace e pesante a una giovane donna, figlia di un nobile locale. Per "lavare questo insulto" il marito della ragazza uccise l'ufficiale. Fu la scintilla che spinse tanti altri uomini (ma anche donne) di Palermo a scatenare la "caccia al francese" dando così il via alla rivoluzione nota col nome di Vespro Siciliano. Motto di quella ribellione sanguinosa, che però portò i siciliani a liberarsi dalla dominazione straniera,  fu ANTUDO! La strana parola non è altro che la contrazione di Animus Tuus Dominus (il coraggio sia il tuo signore) e divenne un vero e proprio grido di guerra. Inizialmente ANTUDO fu scritto anche sulla nuova bandiera che i siciliani liberi adottarono in quello stesso anno, e che ancora oggi è la bandiera della regione, con il colore rosso di Corleone, quello giallo di Palermo e la triscele al centro.  ANTUDO venne usato ancora durante le rivolte siciliane del 1647, durante i moti del 1820, durante la rivolta antiborbonica del 1847 e durante il separatismo siciliano del 1943-1946.  ---- Una simpatica curiosità: durante la rivoluzione del Vespro, per "stanare" i francesi che cercavano di nascondersi dalla furia popolare, veniva chiesto a tutti di ripetere la parola "ciciri" (ceci, in siciliano). I francesi, che non possono pronunciare la "c" dicevano "scisciri" e venivano subito individuati e uccisi.

In the spring of 1282, in a Sicily dominated by the French Anjous, the city of Palermo witnessed an apparently trivial event. A French soldier insulted a young woman, the daughter of a local nobleman. To "wash this insult" the husband of the girl killed the soldier. It was the spark that incited many other men (and women) from Palermo to start the "French hunt" and the revolution known as the "Sicilian Vespers". The motto of the bloody rebellion, which led Sicilians to free themselves from foreign domination, was ANTUDO! The strange word is nothing but the contraction of Animus Tuus Dominus (courage is your lord) and became a real war cry. Initially ANTUDO was also written on the new flag that the Sicilians adopted in that same year, which still is the flag of the region, with the red color of Corleone, the yellow of Palermo and the Triskelion symbol in the middle. ANTUDO was still used during the uprising in Sicily in 1647, during the riots of 1820, during the war against the Bourbons of 1847 and during the Sicilian Independence riots of 1943-1946. ---- A funny curiosity: during the revolution of the Vespers, in order to find the French who were trying to hide from the popular fury, the people were asked  to repeat the word "ciciri" (chickpeas, in Sicilian). The French, who could not pronounce the "c" said "shesheree" and were immediately identified and killed.
