SICILIA MODERN ART 4: VANEDDA STREET ART

C'è un piccolo paese alle pendici dell'Etna dal nome romantico, Valverde. Un luogo piccolo e spesso ignorato dal turismo di massa - ma non da quello religioso, dato che qui è presente un famoso santuario dedicato alla Madonna. Tra il santuario antichissimo (risalente addirittura al Medioevo) e la parte nuova della cittadina, comune autonomo dagli anni Cinquanta, sorge un intrico di piccole strade e vicoletti. Alcuni di questi di recente sono diventati un museo a cielo aperto. Una "expo" di arte contemporanea che imita qualcosa di più grande, i murales di Marsiglia in Francia, con garbo e umiltà.

Il progetto VANEDDA STREET ART ("vanedda" in siciliano sta per "vicolo") nasce nel 2017 grazie alla spinta culturale che ha unito insieme il governo cittadino e alcune associazioni e che ha affidato ad artisti contemporanei il compito di raccontare storie sui muri, con bombolette spray e tanta passione. 

Oggi, se passeggiate tra Via Nuova e Via Dei Portici, potrete ammirare veri e propri quadri firmati da Salvo Ligama, Alice Loma, Wadara, Salvo Mauro, Bread Pitto, Nespoon, Giuseppina Toscano e Alberto Ruce i quali ci portano dalla natura aspra siciliana ai ricordi del cinema italiano, dal mistero di volti quasi alieni fino a Madonne consacrate. Nel silenzio della quiete del paesino, ammirare queste opere è un toccasana per l'anima e per il corpo.

Non c'è fretta, non c'è ansia e ... non c'è biglietto da pagare. Una parte del progetto VANEDDA STREET ART ha superato anche i confini del quartiere ed è approdato sui muri esterni della scuola elementare di Valverde. Delle enormi gru volanti, simbolo della cultura cattolica del posto, riempiono la prospettiva insieme a uno schermo con i pixel a vista che inghiotte quasi casualmente le finestre delle aule. Fanno parte del progetto anche le scritte luminose che riproducono, sulle facciate dei condomini, antichi detti siciliani, e le panchine colorate sparse lungo il percorso.

Basta mezz'ora, una passeggiata e un caffé per godere di questo spettacolo. Possibilmente in uno di quei magnifici giorni di sole che solo la Sicilia sa regalare. L'Etna, meraviglioso quadro della natura, è sempre lì che veglia su tutto ... brontolando di tanto in tanto.

There is a small town on the slopes of Mount Etna with a romantic name, Valverde (Green Valley). A small place often ignored by mass tourism - but not by the religious one, since there is a famous sanctuary dedicated to the Virgin Mary here. Between the very ancient sanctuary (dating back to the Middle Ages) and the new part of the town, an independent municipality since the 1950s, there is a maze of small streets and alleys. Some of these have recently become an open-air museum. An "expo" of contemporary art that imitates something much bigger, the murals of Marseille in France, with grace and humility.

The VANEDDA STREET ART project ("vanedda" in Sicilian means "alley") started in 2017. It was a cultural drive that brought together the town government and some local clubs which entrusted contemporary artists with the task of telling stories on the walls, by using spray cans and a lot of passion.

So today, if you walk between Via Nuova and Via Dei Portici, you can admire real paintings

signed by artists Salvo Ligama, Alice Loma, Wadara, Salvo Mauro, Bread Pitto, Nespoon, Giuseppina Toscano and Alberto Ruce. They take us from the harsh Sicilian nature to memories of the Italian cinema, from the mystery of alien faces to consecrated Madonnas. In the quiet silence of the neighbourhood, admiring these works is a panacea for the soul and the body. There's no rush, there's no anxiety and... there's no ticket to pay! A part of the VANEDDA STREET ART project has also gone beyond the boundaries of the neighborhood and landed on the external walls of the Valverde elementary school. Huge flying cranes, a symbol of the local Catholic culture, fill the perspective of the building, together with a pixelated screen that almost randomly swallows the classrooms' windows. Also part of the project are the luminous writings that reproduce ancient Sicilian mottos on the façades of the houses, and the coloured benches scattered along the route.

Just half-an-hour of your time, a short walk and a coffee break ... and you can freely enjoy this show. Possibly in one of those magnificent sunny days that Sicily can offer. Mount Etna, a wonderful real picture by nature itself, is always there, behind you, watching over everything ... . And grumbling from time to time.

SICILIA MODERN ART 2: LA FIUMARA D'ARTE

Quella che vedete nella foto qui in alto è una camera d'albergo. Proprio così, una delle tante camere del fantasioso Hotel Atelier sul Mare, situato a Castel di Tusa un comune affacciato sul Tirreno, non lontano da Cefalù. L'hotel, idea geniale dell'istrionico mecenate Antonio Presti, è solo il completamento di un progetto grandioso che ha visto la luce negli anni Ottanta del secolo scorso: la FIUMARA D'ARTE.

CHE COSA E' UNA FIUMARA? In siciliano con questo termine si indica il letto di un torrente di breve corso, e solitamente stagionale. Si tratta di corsi d'acqua che si scatenano durante l'inverno o durante le alluvioni occasionali, con piene travolgenti, ma che per il resto dell'anno sono quasi sempre a secco. O caratterizzati da poca acqua. Il torrente Tusa è uno di questi, sul versante tirrenico messinese. Proprio alla foce del torrente, Alberto Presti volle erigere un monumento in ricordo del padre appena scomparso, nel 1982. Ne affidò il progetto all'artista Pietro Consagra che costruì una forma astratta in cemento chiamata "La Materia Poteva Non Esserci".

LA FIUMARA D'ARTE nasce proprio da questo primo monumento. La stranezza di quell'opera di arte contemporanea nelle campagne messinesi attirava curiosi e turisti. Alberto Presti vide così il potenziale di quel progetto. Decise di scatenare la creatività di artisti giovani e meno giovani lungo tutto il corso del torrente, dal mare fino ai borghi di montagna vicini alle sue sorgenti. Nacquero così decine di opere incredibili ... la caserma dei carabinieri dipinta a Castel di Lucio (autori: Dorazio e Marini), la piramide rossa "38° Parallelo" a Motta d'Affermo (di Mauro Staccioli), "Energia Mediterranea" una grande onda blu opera di Antonio Di Palma, "Finestra sul Mare" la grande cornice blu che inquadra la spiaggia, opera di Tano Fresta. E poi il favoloso labirinto rotondo, in cemento rosso, che Italo Lanfredini ha costruito tra i monti di Castel di Lucio. E il famoso hotel dalle stanze straordinarie, dove artisti e visitatori possono alloggiare durante gli eventi.

INTORNO ALLA FIUMARA D'ARTE sorgono sette comuni che altrimenti baserebbero la propria economia solo su agricoltura, pesca e pastorizia. Oggi, invece, sono consorziati in un percorso culturale e turistico che li rende speciali. Non solo in Sicilia ma in tutto il mondo. Se verrete a visitare le opere straordinarie di Fiumara d'Arte, risalirete la valle del Tusa esplorando luoghi come: Castel di Tusa, Mistretta, Villa Margi, Motta d'Affermo, Castel di Lucio. E a pochi passi ... le spiagge di Cefalù, quelle di  Sant'Agata di Militello e un po' più distanti il magnifico litorale di Capo d'Orlando.

PER ARRIVARE: seguite l'autostrada A20 Messina-Palermo, uscendo al casello diretto di Tusa. L'aeroporto più vicino è quello di Palermo (poco più di un'ora in macchina), ma si può atterrare anche a Catania e raggiungere poi Tusa con un transfer di due ore e mezza via autostrade A18 e A20.

What you see in the top photo above, under the main title, is a hotel room. That's right, one of the many rooms of the crazy hotel Atelier sul Mare, located in Castel di Tusa (Messina). This small town overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea is not far from the most famous Cefalù. The hotel, a brilliant idea of ​​the histrionic art patron Antonio Presti, is only the completion of a grandiose project that started in the 1980s: the FIUMARA D'ARTE.

WHAT IS A "FIUMARA"? In Sicilian, this term indicates the bed of a short-flowing stream, and usually

a seasonal one. These streams break out during the winter or during occasional rain storms, with overwhelming floods, but they are almost always dry for the rest of the year. Or characterized by little water. The Tusa stream is one of them. Right at the mouth of the stream, Alberto Presti wanted to erect a monument in memory of his father who had just passed away, in 1982. He entrusted the project to the artist Pietro Consagra who built an abstract form in concrete called "La Materia Potrebbe Non Esserci" (materials could not be here).

THE FIUMARA D'ARTE (the stream of art) was born from this first monument. The strangeness of that work of contemporary art in the Messina countryside attracted onlookers and tourists. Alberto Presti thus saw the potential of that project. He decided to unleash the creativity of young and old artists along the entire course of the stream, from the sea to the mountain villages near its springs. Thus were born dozens of incredible works, such as: the painted carabinieri barracks in Castel di Lucio (authors: Dorazio and Marini), the red pyramid "38 ° Parallelo" in Motta d'Affermo (by Mauro Staccioli), "Mediterranean Energy" a big blue wave by Antonio Di Palma, "Window on the Sea" the big blue frame that frames the beach, by Tano Fresta. And then the fabulous round labyrinth, in red concrete, that Italo Lanfredini built in the mountains of Castel di Lucio. And the famous hotel with extraordinary rooms, where artists and visitors can stay during the events.

AROUND THE FIUMARA D'ARTE there are seven municipalities that would otherwise base their economy only on agriculture, fishing and farm breeding. Today, however, they are associated with a cultural and tourist path that makes them special. Not only in Sicily but all over the world. If you come to visit the extraordinary works of Fiumara d'Arte, you will go up the Tusa valley exploring places such as: Castel di Tusa, Mistretta, Villa Margi, Motta d'Affermo, Castel di Lucio. And just a few steps away ... there are the beaches of Cefalù, those of Sant'Agata di Militello and a little further away the magnificent coast of Capo d'Orlando.

HOW TO GET THERE: follow the A20 Messina-Palermo motorway, taking the Tusa direct exit. The closest airport is Palermo (just over an hour by car), but you can also land in Catania and then reach Tusa with a two-and a half-hour transfer via the A18 and A20 motorways.
