Antonello da Messina

Il più grande artista siciliano, il nostro genio della pittura, nacque a Messina nel 1430 col nome di Antonio Di Giovanni (o Di Giovannantonio) e già a quindici anni era al lavoro presso diverse botteghe artistiche, prima nella sua città, poi a Palermo e per un certo periodo anche ad Alcamo, vicino Trapani. A vent'anni si trasferisce a Napoli presso la bottega del pittore Colantonio e qui conosce e ammira le prime opere fiamminghe provenienti da artisti olandesi. Il loro stile conquista il giovane siciliano al punto che cerca di imitarli, soprattutto dipingendo scene della passione e morte di Cristo. Nel 1457 è già sposato e padre di un figlio, ed è divenuto "maestro", quindi può aprire una bottega di pittura propria ed eseguire lavori a pagamento. Conosciuto col nome di Antonello da Messina, lavora prima in Calabria, poi torna nella sua Messina, dove rimane a lungo eseguendo opere per diverse chiese e famiglie lungo tutta la fascia tirrenica della Sicilia. Dopo i quarant'anni lo troviamo spesso in viaggio tra Roma, Firenze e soprattutto Venezia dove incrociò il proprio sapere artistico con quello del grande Giovanni Bellini e ne tornò ancora una volta trasformato. Rientrato in Sicilia, gli ultimi anni furono febbrili e ricchi di lavori bellissimi, come la ANNUNZIATA DI PALERMO (foto in alto) datata 1476. Purtroppo questo grande artista, che ha preceduto i tempi e portato la modernità in un'isola lontana da tutto, che altrimenti mai avrebbe conosciuto certi colori e certe pose ... morì non ancora cinquantenne, nel 1479. Divise soldi, beni e proprietà tra i parenti e si fece seppellire vestito con un semplice saio francescano, umilissimo nella sua grandezza. Sono sue opere come: LA CROCIFISSIONE DI SIBIU, RITRATTO DI IGNOTO MARINAIO, SAN SEBASTIANO, SALVADOR MUNDI,  SAN GIROLAMO NELLO STUDIO, RITRATTO DI UOMO, ECCE HOMO, soltanto per citare quelli più conosciuti e ammirati. 

Nel 2015 la scrittrice Silvana La Spina ha pubblicato un romanzo "L'uomo che veniva da Messina" in cui incrocia la storia del grande pittore con una serie di leggende legate alla sua vita sentimentale e ai suoi viaggi che lo rendono molto più umano e vicino a chi legge. Certamente Antonello non fu capito, al suo tempo, ma ha seminato il futuro non solo in Sicilia ... in tutta Italia.

The greatest Sicilian artist, our genius of painting, was born in Messina in 1430 with the name of Antonio Di Giovanni (or Di Giovannantonio) and at fifteen he was already at work in various art shops, first in his hometown, then in Palermo and for a certain period also in Alcamo, near Trapani. At the age of twenty he moved to Naples in the workshop of the painter Colantonio and here he met and admired the first Flemish works by Dutch artists. Their style charmed the young Sicilian to the point that he tried to imitate them, above all by painting scenes of the passion and death of Christ. In 1457 he was already married and father of a son, and had become a "master", so he could open a workshop of his own and paint paid works. Known as Antonello, he worked first in Calabria, then returned to his Messina, where he remained for a long time painting in various churches and rich homes throughout the Tyrrhenian coast of Sicily. In his 40s we often find him traveling between Rome, Florence and above all Venice where he crossed his artistic knowledge with that of the great Giovanni Bellini and he once again transformed his style. Returning to Sicily, the last few years were very active and full of beautiful works, such as the ANNOUNCIATION OF PALERMO (photo above) dated 1476. Unfortunately, this great artist ... who preceded the times and brought modernity to an island far from everything in the world and that otherwise would never have known certain colors and  poses ... he died not yet fifty years old, in 1479. He divided money, property and goods among the relatives and had himself buried dressed in a simple Franciscan habit, very humble in his greatness. Among his best art works: THE CRUCIFIXION OF SIBIU, PORTRAIT OF UNKNOWN SAILOR, ST SEBASTIAN, SALVADOR MUNDI, ST JEROME IN THE STUDIO, PORTRAIT OF MAN, ECCE HOMO, just to mention the most admired ones.

Writer Silvana La Spina published in 2015 the novel "The man from Messina", crossing Antonello's real life with tales and legends about his love affairs and his journeys. Sure this makes the artist -who was not understood by his contemporaries, back in the 15th century- more human and real, and closer to us.
