Il pianto dei Fogliamari - An Easter cry

Le celebrazioni della Pasqua in Sicilia sono talmente tante e originali che fare un elenco sarebbe dispersivo e potrebbe togliere molto spazio ad altri argomenti. Quindi per gli eventi compresi tra oggi, 21 marzo, e il giorno di Pasqua 28 marzo 2016, abbiamo deciso di parlarvi di UN EVENTO IN PARTICOLARE: I "FOGLIAMARI DA STRATA 'A FOGLIA" DI CALTANISSETTA

I "Fogliamari" sono gruppi di uomini che si prendono l'incarico, il Venerdì Santo, di vegliare e piangere il corpo del Cristo Morto. Lo fanno cantando antiche "lamentazioni" (alcune risalenti al Seicento, altre ancora prima) in latino oppure in dialetto. I canti cominciano alle 18 e vanno avanti fino a notte inoltrata. E’ verosimile che le lamentazioni di Caltanissetta siano uno dei testi più antichi e completi del repertorio della Settimana Santa siciliana e sono speciali anche per la particolarità dell'intonazione, su un'unica linea melodica, cosa che non avviene in nessun altro posto dell'isola (guarda il video linkato in basso)

The celebrations of Easter in Sicily are so many and original that writing down a list would be scattering and confusing.  So in order to describe the events that characterize the Easter Holy Week, this time we have  decided to lead you among the "FOGLIAMARI DA STRATA 'A FOGLIA'  in Caltanissetta, a town in the middle of Sicily.

The "Fogliamari" are groups of men who take the job, on Good Friday, to watch and mourn the Dead Christ's body. They do this by singing ancient "lamentations" (some dating back to the 17th century, or even older) in Latin or in Sicilian dialect. The songs start at 6pm and go on until late at night. It seems that these lamentations of Caltanissetta are the oldest and most complete texts of the repertoire of the Sicilian Holy Week traditions, and also special because of the special intonation, on a single melodic line, which does not happen anywhere else on the island (watch the video linked above)
