Lampàre

La lampàra è una grossa lampada che viene montata sulle barche da pesca, le quali a loro volta assumono lo stesso nome. Alimentata ad acetilene o ad elettricità, la lampàra serve ad attirare i pesci in superficie durante la notte. Gli animali, credendo che la luce sia quella del sole, riprendono le loro attività e vanno a cercare cibo a pelo d'acqua così vengono catturati dai pescatori. Secondo alcuni musei della pesca, pare che il metodo "con lampàra" fosse diffuso già ai tempi dei Greci e dei Romani, sebbene ovviamente allora si usassero le torce e non le sofisticate luminarie moderne. L'uso di questo metodo di pesca comunque è antichissimo e tipicamente siciliano, tanto che il termine "lampàra" oggi usato comunemente nella lingua italiana, in qualsiasi regione, per indicare il tipo di barca con la luce da pesca notturna è una parola siciliana che significa "lampadina".

The lampàra is a large lamp that is put on the back on the fishing boats, which also assume the same name. Powered by acetylene or electricity, the lampàra is used to attract fish to the sea surface at night. The animals, believing that this light is the sun, continue their activities and go up looking  for food so they are caught by fishermen. Some museums of fishing report that the fishing method "with lampàra" has been known and used since the time of the ancient Greeks and Romans, though of course they would use torches, back then, and not the sophisticated modern lights. The use of this way of fishing, so, is very old and typically Sicilian. In fact the term "lampàra" now commonly used in the Italian language, in any region, to indicate the type of boat with light for the night fishing, is a Sicilian word that  means "light bulb".
