SERRE DI VILLALBA

Chi dice che l’interno della Sicilia sia un luogo arido, desolato e triste … dovrebbe frequentare di più quest’isola, magari in stagioni diverse, e scoprire magie come – ad esempio – le Serre di Villalba.

Ci troviamo a Villalba (Caltanissetta), a meno di 300 metri dal centro del paese e all’improvviso ecco tutt’intorno un paesaggio da film western, o da mondo fantastico! Circondate da vigneti, uliveti, pascoli e vegetazione selvatica, a 900 metri di altezza, si elevano questi picchi rocciosi aguzzi, dominati soltanto dalla cima di monte Cozzo Pirtusiddu. Emergono da un paesaggio che in estate è giallo e brullo, ma durante il resto dell’anno offre colori eccezionali: il verde dell’erba fresca in primavera, il rosso dei papaveri a maggio, il colore dorato del grano a giugno. Nascosti dalla vegetazione selvatica, vivono all’ombra di queste rocce conigli, lepri, volpi, diversi tipi di insetti e numerose specie di uccelli.

Chi desidera soltanto rilassarsi davanti a un bel panorama, potrà sostare alle aree attrezzate sistemate nei pressi delle rocche e ammirare la vallata in cui spiccano i tetti di Villalba, il paese di Mussomeli, il Castello Manfredonico, e l’Etna in lontananza. Chi invece si sente in vena di escursioni, può risalire verso la cima di Cozzo Pirtusiddu, con una camminata di circa un’ora (abbastanza impegnativa ma non impossibile) per poi riposare nella macchia di un antico bosco di montagna dove – nel 2011 – sono state scoperte tracce di civiltà preistoriche (per la precisione punte di frecce da caccia). Nella cittadina di Villalba potrete ammirare le chiese di San Giuseppe, della Concezione e la artistica Cappella del Calvario. Non lontano da Villalba si possono visitare Sutera e Santo Stefano Quisquina.

Per arrivare a Villalba e alle rocche delle Serre. In macchina:

• da Palermo, percorrendo la Statale 121;
• da Catania, seguendo l’autostrada A19 con uscita Resuttano e immissione sulla SS 121;
• da Caltanissetta, seguendo la strada Provinciale 42. 

Anche da Messina potete seguire l’autostrada (A18 fino alla Tangenziale di Catania, quindi immissione sulla A19).

L’aeroporto più vicino è quello di Palermo-Punta Raisi-Falcone&Borsellino, distante 101 km per un totale di 1 ora e 45 minuti di transfer.

Who ever said that the interior of Sicily is an arid, desolate and sad place ... ? They should visit this island more, and better,  perhaps in different seasons, so to discover magic places such as - for example - the Serre di Villalba rocks.

We are in Villalba (district of Caltanissetta) here, less than 300 meters from the center of the town and suddenly there is a landscape all around you, like a western movie, or a fantasy world! Surrounded by vineyards, olive groves, pastures and wild vegetation, at 900 meters above sea level, these sharp rocky peaks rise, dominated only by Mount Cozzo Pirtusiddu. They emerge from a landscape that in summer is yellow and barren, but during the rest of the year offers exceptional colours: the green of fresh grass in early spring, the red of poppies in May, the golden colour of wheat in June. Hidden by the wild vegetation, rabbits, hares, foxes, different types of insects and numerous species of birds live in the shade of these rocks.

Those who just want to relax in front of a beautiful view can stop at the equipped pic-nic areas set up near the rocks and admire the valley from above: they shall see the roofs of Villalba stand out, the town of Mussomeli, the Manfredonico Castle, and Mt. Etna in the distance. Those who feel like hiking can climb up to the top of Cozzo Pirtusiddu, with a walk of about an hour (quite challenging but not impossible) and then rest in the scrub of an ancient mountain forest where - in 2011 - traces of prehistoric civilizations were discovered (specifically, hunting arrowheads). In the town of Villalba you can admire the churches of San Giuseppe, Concezione and the artistic Chapel of Calvario. Not far from Villalba you can visit Sutera and Santo Stefano Quisquina.

Get to Villalba and the Serre rocks. By car:

• from Palermo, taking State Road SS121;
• from Catania, following the A19 motorway with the Resuttano exit and joining the SS 121;
• from Caltanissetta, following the Provincial Road SP42.

You can also follow the motorway from Messina (A18 to the Catania ring road, then joining the A19).

The closest airport is Palermo-Punta Raisi-Falcone&Borsellino, 101 km away for a total transfer time of 1 hour and 45 minutes.

Punto più a nord della Sicilia - Northernmost point of Sicily

Qual è il punto più a nord della Sicilia? Pensando all'isola maggiore, molti di voi avranno già risposto "Messina" o per essere più precisi e dettagliati "Capo Peloro (Capo Faro)", ovvero la punta che si estende verso la Calabria. Ci siamo quasi... perchè comunque la risposta esatta si trova sempre nel territorio messinese, ma non è Capo Peloro: è Stromboli.

Andiamo ancor più in profondità con l'esattezza del calcolo. Perchè Stromboli possiede una minuscola estensione che si trova ancora più a nord dell'isola stessa, e questa estensione è lo scoglio di Strombolicchio!

Con la sua modesta e anche (se volete) ridicola dimensione di appena 7.620 metri quadri, Strombolicchio sembra quasi galleggiare come una boa al largo dell'isola di Stromboli, a meno di 2 km dalla costa settentrionale. Formato da antichissime rocce basaltiche e da vegetazione selvatica, questo grosso scoglio è la dimora di molte specie di uccelli migratori e ospita un'unica opera umana, il faro costruito nel 1926 sulla cima. Per raggiungerlo si deve salire una lunga scalinata scavata nella roccia che parte direttamente dal precario approdo nautico alla base dell'isolotto.  

Oltre ad essere il punto più a nord della Sicilia, lo Strombolicchio è protagonista di una leggenda che si tramanda da secoli tra gli eoliani: dicono, infatti, che fosse il "tappo" espulso dallo Stromboli quando iniziò la sua attività eruttiva. Ma oggi sappiamo che le cose non stanno proprio così! Questo scoglio, infatti, è in realtà il residuo di un vulcano esistito prima ancora dello stesso Stromboli, ed è testimone di una delle primissime eruzioni mai avvenute alle isole Eolie. Pare che proprio dallo Strombolicchio tutto l'arcipelago abbia avuto inizio!

Se volete avere il privilegio di trovarvi nel punto più settentrionale della Sicilia, quindi, prendete una barca e approdate a Strombolicchio. Fatelo, però, in compagnia di una guida o di un pescatore strombolano, possibilmente quando il mare non è troppo mosso. Approdare su questo affascinante scoglio non è affatto semplice ... ed è un onore concesso a pochi!

Where is the northernmost point of Sicily? Thinking of the largest island, many of you will have already answered "Messina" or to be more precise and detailed "Cape Peloro (or Faro)", that is, the point that extends towards Calabria. Well, you are almost there... because in any case the correct answer is still in the district of Messina, but it is not Cape Peloro: it is the island of Stromboli.

Let's go even deeper with the accuracy of the calculation. Because Stromboli has a tiny extension that is set further north than the island itself, and this extension is the rock of Strombolicchio!

With its modest and also (if you like) ridiculous size of just 7,620 square meters, Strombolicchio almost seems to float like a buoy off the island of Stromboli, less than 2 km off the northern coast. Made of ancient basaltic rocks and wild vegetation, this large rock is home to many species of migratory birds and hosts a single human trace, the lighthouse built in 1926 on the summit. To reach it, you have to climb a long staircase carved into the rock that starts directly from the precarious nautical landing at the base of the islet.

In addition to being the northernmost point of Sicily, Strombolicchio is the protagonist of a legend that has been handed down for centuries among the Aeolian people: they say, in fact, that it was the "plug" expelled from Stromboli volcano when its eruptive activity began. But today we know that things are not exactly like that! This rock, in fact, is actually the remnant of a volcano that existed even before Stromboli itself, and is witness to one of the very first eruptions ever to occur at the Aeolian Islands. It seems that the entire archipelago began from Strombolicchio!

If you want to have the privilege of being at the northernmost point of Sicily, then, take a boat and land at Strombolicchio. Do it, however, led by a local guide or a Strombolian fisherman, possibly when the sea is not too rough. Landing on this fascinating rock is not at all easy ... and it is an honour granted to few!

Caltanissetta viene sempre nominata per parlare di problemi e difficoltà ... siccità, mafia, disoccupazione, abbandono ... ed è talmente poco considerata, a livello nazionale, che i giornalisti sbagliano sempre il nome (Caltanisetta, con una sola "s"). Eppure basterebbe poco per conoscere meglio questa deliziosa città, situata nel cuore profondo della Sicilia in una posizione - un tempo - certamente vantaggiosa e oggi, purtroppo, sfavorevole.

Sicilia Muse Culture ha dedicato a Caltanissetta un articolo completo (CHE TROVATE  QUI). Oggi vogliamo invece parlare delle persone di Caltanissetta, delle loro caratteristiche e... dei loro gusti.

Discendenti di guerrieri arabi (il nome della città deriva da Qalat Anissa, il castello delle donne) e di artisti bizantini provenienti dalla città di Nissa, da cui il nome attuale degli abitanti (nisseni), le persone che abitano e respirano l'aria di Caltanissetta tendono ad essere allo stesso tempo riservate e determinate. Nel silenzio lavorano e creano meraviglie. Non è un caso se da qui sono partiti numerosi artisti - Giuseppe Fratelloni, pittore; Michele Tripisciano, scultore; Mauro Tumminelli, letterato e Piermaria Rosso di Sansecondo, commediografo - ma anche un noto chirurgo del XX secolo, il dott. Ernesto Tricomi, e il magistrato Giuseppe Ayala. Chi abita in un territorio aspro, difficile, isolato deve scatenare la fantasia ed è per questo che l'arte e l'ingegno trovano terreno fertile nelle menti dei nisseni.  La gente di Caltanissetta è anche molto alla mano, accogliente, schietta... come è tipico di chi è abituato ad aiutarsi quando il resto del mondo si dimentica di te e della tua comunità.

La semplice determinazione delle persone di questo territorio si esprime anche nei gusti. La cucina nissena è fatta di elementi genuini, semplici, umili ma arrangiati in modo incredibile per produrre bontà assolute:

• il Timballo alla Nissena è un timballo di riso a base di carne di maiale, mortadella, uova e melanzane;
• il Pollo Nisseno, si prepara al forno con caciocavallo, pangrattato e limone;
• il Pesto di Caltanissetta si realizza con un mix di pomodori secchi, finocchietto selvatico, mandorle, pinoli e acciughe;
• il dolce da provare è la Crucetta (foto in basso), una antichissima ricetta riscoperta solo da poco e i cui segreti sono custoditi dalle donne del quartiere Santa Croce: si sa soltanto che è a base di mandorle, zucchero e una purea dolce al limone con aggiunta di altri agrumi (in forma di canditi? al naturale? cotti?... nessuno lo sa).

Vale la pena andare a scoprire Caltanissetta e la sua gente.... no?

Caltanissetta is always mentioned to talk about problems and difficulties ... such as drought, mafia, unemployment, decay .... and it is so little considered, at a national level, that journalists always get the name wrong (Caltanisetta, with only one "s"). Yet it would be worth knowing this delightful city better. Located in the deep heart of Sicily in a position - once - certainly advantageous and today, unfortunately, unfavorable, Caltanissetta might charm you.

Sicilia Muse Culture had dedicated a complete article to this city ( YOU CAN FIND IT HERE). Today we want to talk about the people of Caltanissetta, their characteristics and ... the taste of the delicious things they eat and prepare.

Descendants of Arab warriors (the name of the city derives from Qalat Anissa, the castle of women) and Byzantine artists of the city of Nissa, from which the current name of the inhabitants (nisseni) derives, the people who live and breathe the air of Caltanissetta tend to be at the same time shy and determined. In silence, they work and create wonders. It is no coincidence that many artists were born here - Giuseppe Fratelloni, painter; Michele Tripisciano, sculptor; Mauro Tumminelli, writer and Piermaria Rosso di Sansecondo, playwright - but also a well-known surgeon of the 20th century, Dr. Ernesto Tricomi, and the magistrate Giuseppe Ayala are nisseni. Those who live in a harsh, difficult, isolated territory must unleash their imagination and that is why art and genius find fertile ground in the minds of the Nisseni people. The inhabitants of Caltanissetta are also very easy-going, welcoming, frank... as is typical of those who are used to helping each other when the rest of the world forgets about you and your community.

The simple determination of the people of this territory is also expressed in their tastes. The cuisine of Caltanissetta is made of genuine, simple, humble elements but arranged in an incredible way to produce absolute goodness: Timballo alla Nissena is a rice timbale made with pork, mortadella, eggs and aubergines;  Pollo Nisseno is baked chicken with caciocavallo cheese, breadcrumbs and lemon; Pesto di Caltanissetta is made with a mix of dried tomatoes, wild fennel, almonds, pine nuts and anchovies; the dessert to try is Crucetta (photo above), an ancient recipe rediscovered only recently and whose secrets are kept by the women of the Santa Croce neighbourhood: we only know that it is based on almonds, sugar and a sweet lemon puree with the addition of other citrus fruits (in the form of candied fruit? natural? cooked?... nobody knows).

It is worth going to discover Caltanissetta and its people.... isn't it?

ARAGONA

Il 6 gennaio 1606 il conte Baldassarre Naselli III fondava, nel cuore della Sicilia, il feudo di Dièsi costruendovi un palazzo signorile e un borgo intorno, che presto prese il nome della madre spagnola del suo signore, Aragona.

Retto dalla famiglia Naselli per ben due secoli, il borgo si sviluppò in una cittadina che oggi conta circa 9000 abitanti e fa parte del territorio di Agrigento. L'economia del feudo si basò quasi sempre sui prodotti agricoli ma nel Novecento - grazie allo sfruttamento delle miniere di zolfo - il lavoro degli abitanti dipendeva quasi esclusivamente da questo. Anche la famiglia dello scrittore Luigi Pirandello possedeva delle miniere nella zona di Aragona.

Il decadimento iniziò a metà XX secolo, quando i metodi estrattivi cambiarono e molte miniere chiusero i battenti. La povertà e l'abbandono dei campi causò l'emigrazione di buona parte della popolazione locale. Un accenno di ripresa si è avuto alla fine degli anni Novanta, quando anche Aragona, come molti centri dell'agrigentino, ha deciso di puntare sul turismo. Lo ha fatto grazie alle vecchie miniere (che suscitano l'interesse degli appassionati di architetture industriali) e grazie alle MACCALUBE.

Le Maccalube (o Macalube), cioè i vulcani di fango, ad Aragona ci sono sempre stati. Ma soltanto a fine XX secolo sono divenuti una attrazione turistica. La Riserva Naturale creata all'occorrenza, e gestita da Legambiente, monitora questi particolari fenomeni vulcanici che -sebbene abbordabili- sono comunque pericolosi. Nel 2014 una improvvisa esplosione uccise due bambini in visita con la famiglia sul posto. Da allora, a causa di lungaggini processuali, il sito è rimasto chiuso. Nel 2024 è stata stabilita la "non responsabilità" di Legambiente nella disgrazia e oggi si parla di prossima riapertura possibile. Il termine Maccalube deriva dall'arabo "Maqlub" che significa "rivoltamento" e indica proprio il rivoltamento della terra che espelle all'esterno ciò che di solito sta nel sottosuolo. COME ARRIVARE E COSA VEDERE IN CITTA'

Aragona e le Maccalube si raggiungono da Catania e da Palermo tramite l'autostrada A19, con uscita Agrigento per immettersi nella Statale SS 189. Il centro dista circa 2 ore da entrambi gli aeroporti principali (Fontanarossa di Catania e Falcone&Borsellino di Palermo). Oltre ai famosi vulcanetti, vale la visita anche al centro storico della cittadina dove potrete ammirare: l’antico Palazzo Baronale - Palazzo Naselli,  la Chiesa del Rosario con all’interno un soffitto ligneo del ‘700 e un tesoro di ex voto custodito in sacrestia. Tra le reliquie custodite qui, anche una preziosa reliquia contenente un lembo della Sacra Sindone. Visitate anche la Chiesa Madre dal nome particolare. Infatti è forse una delle poche chiese in Europa dedicata ai Santi Tre Re (i Magi che visitarono Gesù).

On January 6th, 1606, Count Baldassarre Naselli III founded the fiefdom of Dièsi in the very heart of Sicily, building a stately mansion and a surrounding village, which soon took the name of its lord's Spanish mother, Aragona.

Ruled by the Naselli family for two centuries, the village developed into a town that today has about 9,000 inhabitants and is part of the territory of Agrigento. The economy of the fiefdom was almost always based on agricultural products, but in the 20th century - thanks to the exploitation of sulfur mines - the work of the inhabitants depended almost exclusively on this. The family of the Nobel writer Luigi Pirandello also owned mines in the Aragona area.

The decline began in the mid-twentieth century, when the extraction methods changed and many mines closed their doors. Poverty and the abandonment of the fields caused the emigration of a large part of the local population. There was a hint of recovery at the end of the 1990s, when Aragona, like many other towns in the Agrigento area, decided to focus on tourism. It did so thanks to the old mines (which arouse the interest of fans of industrial architecture) and thanks to the MACCALUBE site.

Maccalube (or Macalube), that is, the mud volcanoes, have always existed in Aragona. But only at the end of the 20th century did they become a tourist attraction. The Natural Reserve created for the purpose, and managed by Legambiente Association, monitors these particular volcanic phenomena which - although easily approachable - are still dangerous. In 2014, a sudden explosion killed two children who were visiting with their family on the site. Since then, due to lengthy legal proceedings, the site has remained closed. In 2024, Legambiente was declared "not responsible" for the tragedy and today there is chance of reopening soon. The word Maccalube derives from the Arabic "Maqlub" which means "turning" and indicates the turning of the earth that expels outside what is usually underground. HOW TO GET THERE AND WHAT TO SEE IN TOWN

Aragona and the Maccalube can be reached from Catania and Palermo via the A19 motorway,  Agrigento exit, to then join the SS 189 state road. The town is about 2 hours away from both main airports (Fontanarossa in Catania and Falcone&Borsellino in Palermo). In addition to the famous volcanoes, it is also worth visiting the historic centre of the town where you can admire: the ancient Palazzo Baroniale - Palace Naselli, the Church of the Rosary with an 18th century wooden ceiling inside and a treasure of votive offerings kept in the sacristy. Among the relics kept here, there is also a precious relic containing a piece of the Holy Shroud. Also visit the Main Church with its unusual name. In fact, it is perhaps one of the few churches in Europe dedicated to the Holy Three Kings  who visited Jesus at birth.

Strani Nomi Siciliani (niente è come sembra) - Weird Sicilian Names

 

Giardini Naxos

Cari turisti, in Sicilia niente è mai come sembra. O come suona. State ben attenti quindi, quando venite dalle nostre parti, a cosa cercate e dove lo cercate.

Se chiedete a qualcuno dove si trova quel bellissimo parco chiamato "i Giardini di Naxos"... la gente vi riderà in faccia; se vi informate per visitare "il Palazzo Adriano" nessuno saprà cosa indicarvi; e se pensate di arrivare a Valverde e di ammirare una splendida "vallata" ... vi sbagliate di grosso! La nostra isola è costellata di località dai nomi veramente strani e proprio per questo interessanti e divertenti. Nomi di città e di paesi che sono una vera "trappola" per turisti poco informati. Qualche esempio? Eccolo!

GIARDINI NAXOS (Messina), non è un parco fiorito, ma un comune. Il nome "giardini" deriva dal ricordo delle distese di agrumeti che un tempo circondavano il villaggio (oggi una cittadina turistica famosa, gemella della vicina Taormina), unito all'antico nome greco di Naxos. Non troverere nessun parco qui, se non quello archeologico e bellissimo dell'antico insediamento, lungo la via che conduce al molo.

PIAZZA ARMERINA, non è un indirizzo civico, ma una cittadina di 20.000 abitanti in provincia di Enna. Il suo antico nome normanno (Placia) indicava forse una "Piazza d'Armi" o ancor meglio una "Piazza di Mercato" dato che in passato questo centro era ricchissimo, soprattutto per i commerci. Il nome "Armerina" deriva dal colle Armerino su cui sorge, a dominare con splendidi monumenti (la grande Cattedrale è uno spettacolo!) le vallate sottostanti.

PALAZZO ADRIANO (Palermo) in origine era davvero un palazzo, anzi un castello. Il conte Ruggero, al tempo dei Normanni, recuperò un antico castrum romano chiamato Casale Arianum e vi costruì una mensa arcivescovile per il Vescovo Gerlando di Agrigento. Caduto in abbandono nei secoli successivi, venne recuperato nel XV secolo dai profughi albanesi in fuga dalle guerre del proprio paese. Oggi, Palazzo Adriano è una cittadina arbeereshe popolata da persone che parlano la lingua albanese e coltivano le tradizioni di questa cultura. Le magnifiche chiese (Matrice, Santa Maria del Lume, San Nicola) sono state scenografia di molti film ambientati in queste strade.

TRECASTAGNI non sono tre alberi di castagno ma ... un paesino della provincia di Catania, sul fianco sud-orientale dell'Etna. Con 11.000 abitanti e una lunga tradizione agricola e turistica, sfoggia le sue bellissime chiese di pietra lavica affacciata sul panorama della costa ionica. Il nome deriva dai "tre casti agnelli" (Sant'Alfio, San Cirino, San Filadelfo) giovani martiri della prima era cristiana e patroni del posto, ai quali è dedicato il santuario della piazza principale. Non lontano da Trecastagni sorge anche "Tremestieri" dove non troverete certo tre umili lavoratori ma il ricordo di tre "monasteri", oggi scomparsi, alle porte di Catania.

VALVERDE è un piccolo centro della provincia di Catania situato sul fianco est dell'Etna. Comune autonomo dal 1952, si trova in collina e di vallate, qui, non ne vedrete nemmeno l'ombra! Allora perchè questo nome? Molto probabilmente fu una "storpiatura" italiana del termine siciliano "Bedduviddi" (bel verde) o "Bedduvidiri" (belvedere) data la sua posizione panoramica che domina da un lato la vista dell'Etna e dall'altro la costa di Aci Trezza!

Palazzo Adriano

Dear tourists, in Sicily nothing is ever as it seems. Or as it sounds. So, be very careful what you are looking for and where you are looking for it.

If you ask someone where that beautiful park called the gardens of Naxos (Giardini Naxos) is... people will laugh in your face; if you ask to visit the palace of Adriano (Palazzo Adriano) no one will know what to tell you; and if you think you will arrive in Valverde and admire a splendid "green valley" ... you are very wrong! Our island is dotted with places with truly strange names and precisely for this reason interesting and fun. Names of cities and towns can be are a real "trap" for uninformed tourists, here. Some examples? Here they are!

GIARDINI NAXOS (Messina), is not "the gardens of Naxos", but a municipality. The name "giardini" comes from the memory of the expanses of citrus groves that once surrounded the village (today a famous tourist town, twin of nearby Taormina), combined with the ancient Greek name of Naxos. You will not find any park here, except the archaeological and beautiful one of the ancient settlement, along the road that leads to the pier.

PIAZZA ARMERINA, is not a "square", but a town of 20,000 inhabitants in the district of Enna. Its ancient Norman name (Placia) perhaps indicated a "Castle Square" or even better a "Market Place" given that in the past this town was very rich, especially as for trade. The name "Armerina" derives from the Armerino hill on which it stands, dominating with splendid monuments (the large Cathedral is a spectacle!) the valleys below.

PALAZZO ADRIANO (Palermo) was originally a real palace, or rather a castle. Count Ruggero, at the time of the Normans, recovered an ancient Roman castrum called Casale Arianum and built an archiepiscopal seat for Bishop Gerlando of Agrigento. Abandoned in the following centuries, it was recovered in the 15th century by Albanian refugees fleeing the wars of their country. Today, Palazzo Adriano is an Arbeereshe town populated by people who speak the Albanian language and cultivate the traditions of this culture. The magnificent churches (Matrice, Santa Maria del Lume, San Nicola) have offered the location for many films set in these streets.

TRECASTAGNI are not three chestnut trees but ... a small town in the district of Catania, on the south-eastern side of Mt Etna. With 11,000 inhabitants and a long agricultural and tourist tradition, it shows off its beautiful lava stone churches overlooking the panorama of the Ionian coast. The name derives from the "tre casti agni" - three chaste lambs (young martyrs of the early Christian era, St Alphio, Cirino and Philadelpho) and patrons of the place, to whom the sanctuary in the main square is dedicated. Not far from Trecastagni there is also "Tremestieri" (three jobs) where you will certainly not find three humble workers but the memory of three "monasteries", now disappeared, at the gates of Catania.

VALVERDE is a small town in the district of Catania located on the eastern side of Etna. An independent municipality since 1952, it is located on a hill and you will not see even the shadow of valleys here! So why this name? Most likely it was an Italian "corruption" of the Sicilian term "Bedduviddi" (beautiful green) or "Bedduvidiri" (belvedere) given its panoramic position that dominates the view of Etna on one side and the coast of Aci Trezza on the other!

Istituire il Parco Regionale dei Monti Nebrodi, in Sicilia, non è stato solo un atto amministrativo ed un gesto ecologico: è stata una vera sfida alla mafia. 

I suoi 86.000 ettari di bosco e montagne e pascoli, infatti, dichiarati zona protetta nel 1993 - in un periodo in cui la ferocia dei clan aveva raggiunto livelli spaventosi ovunque in Italia - tolsero terreni preziosi a molti "boss di campagna" che su pascoli, macellazione clandestina e coltivazioni illecite, tra quelle montagne, facevano soldi a palate. Non è stato facile e non è stato una cosa da poco, creare questo paradiso incredibile ... una vera e propria "regione" dentro la regione Sicilia, dove sembra di stare in Scandinavia e non più al centro del Mediterraneo.

Il Parco dei Nebrodi è la più estesa area naturale protetta di Sicilia, tende a preservare la purezza e la bellezza della catena montuosa omonima la quale, insieme alle Madonie e ai Peloritani, forma la "spina dorsale" dell'isola. Entro i suoi confini sono racchiusi: Monte Soro - la terza cima più alta di Sicilia (dopo l'Etna e Monte Pizzo Carbonara), gli splendidi boschi di San Teodoro, i laghi del Biviere di Cesarò, rocche dolomitiche come Monte San Fratello e Rocche del Crasto, le spettacolari Cascate del Catafurco e ben 24 centri abitati (19 nella provincia di Messina, 3 nel territorio di Catania e 2 in quello di Enna). Le cittadine più importanti e punti di riferimento del Parco sono: Cesarò, San Teodoro, Floresta, Randazzo, Bronte e Troìna. I centri turisticamente più famosi, oltre a quelli già citati, sono San Fratello, Santo Stefano di Camastra, Maniace, San Marco D'Alunzio, Sant'Agata Militello e Mistretta. Ma un po' tutti i villaggi e i paesini del parco hanno un'importanza turistica perchè offrono paesaggi unici e stili di vita lenti, rilassanti e felici, ottimi prodotti eno-gastronomici .

Il Parco dei Nebrodi si caratterizza per le foreste di querce, erica, lentisco, lecci e ginestre. La fauna racchiude il famoso "maialino nero selvatico", cinghiali, volpi, istrici, rapaci e anche molti cavalli allo stato brado. Si sono estinte già a metà del XIX secolo, purtroppo, le popolazioni di daini, caprioli, lupi e gufi reali!

Per arrivare al Parco

Dal versante nord, percorrendo la autostrada Messina-Palermo A20, con uscita Capo d'Orlando per proseguire su SS 116, sulla SS 289 oppure sulla SS 117, oltre alle tante strade provinciali. Da Catania, tramite l'autostrada A19 per Palermo, uscendo a Catenanuova per poi proseguire verso Troìna e Cesarò.

Establishing the Regional Park of the Nebrodi Mountains in Sicily was not just an administrative and ecological act: it was a real challenge to the mafia.

Its 86,000 hectares of forest and mountains and pastures declared a protected area in 1993 - that is, in a period when the ferocity of the mafia clans had reached frightening levels everywhere in Italy - took away precious lands from many "country bosses" who made tons of money on illegal pastures, clandestine slaughter and illicit cultivations, among those mountains. It was not easy and it was not a small thing to do, creating this incredible paradise ... a real "region" within the region of Sicily, where it seems to be in Sweden and no longer in the center of the Mediterranean!

The Park of the Nebrodi is today the largest protected natural area in Sicily. It aims to preserve the purity and beauty of the mountain range of the same name which, together with the Madonie and Peloritani mountains, forms the "backbone" of the island. Within its borders you will find: Mount Soro - the third highest peak in Sicily (after Etna and Mount Pizzo Carbonara), the splendid woods of San Teodoro, the two lakes Biviere di Cesarò, Dolomite-like rocks such as Monte San Fratello and Rocche del Crasto, the spectacular Catafurco waterfalls and 24 urban centers (19 in the district of Messina, 3 in the district of Catania and 2 in Enna's). The most important towns and points of reference of the Park are: Cesarò, San Teodoro, Floresta, Randazzo, Bronte and Troìna. The most famous tourist places, in addition to those already mentioned, are San Fratello, Santo Stefano di Camastra, Maniace, San Marco D'Alunzio, Sant'Agata Militello and Mistretta. But all the villages and hamlets of the park have a tourist importance because they offer unique landscapes and slow, relaxing and happy lifestyles, plus excellent genuine food and wine.

The Park of the Nebrodi is characterized by forests of oaks, heather, mastic, holm oaks and brooms. The fauna includes the famous "wild black pig", wild boars, foxes, porcupines, birds of prey and also many wild horses. Unfortunately, the populations of fallow deer, roe deer, wolves and eagle-owls became extinct already in the mid-19th century!

How to get to the Park

From the north side of Sicily, take the Messina-Palermo A20 motorway, exit at Capo d'Orlando and continue on SS 116, SS 289 or SS 117, as well as the many provincial roads. From Catania, take the A19 motorway to Palermo, exit at Catenanuova and then continue towards Troìna and Cesarò.

Cosa fare e non fare a CATANIA - Do and do nots

 

Sicuramente Catania è una delle città più conosciute e famose di Sicilia. Non tanto - non solo - per i tanti collegamenti che consentono ai turisti di tutto il mondo di arrivare e muoversi facilmente (l'Aeroporto Fontanarossa, la stazione centrale, i tanti bus regionali) ma anche e soprattutto per essere la base di partenza verso gli itinerari dell'Etna. 

Se siete a Catania ammirerete il suo elegante centro storico barocco, con il nero della lava che si intreccia in riccioli e mascheroni alla bianca pietra calcarea di Siracusa e la statua dell'elefante che domina davanti al duomo. Andrete a spasso tra chiese monumentali, splendidi giardini, un mercato del pesce ricco di colori, un moderno lungomare e tanti siti archeologici. Eppure per affrontare al meglio Catania (che non a caso contende a Palermo il ruolo di città più bella di Sicilia) dovete sapere cosa è meglio fare e cosa non fare mai, per integrarsi al meglio nell'atmosfera della "città dell'elefante". COSA DOVRESTI FARE A CATANIA

Senza dubbio alcuno, dovresti visitare la bellissima Cattedrale dedicata a Sant'Agata;

Passeggiare nello scenario antico di Via dei Crociferi;

Ammirare le rovine a cielo aperto di Piazza Stesicoro;

Comprare il pesce fresco alla Piscarìa;

Attraversare il vivace mercato della Fera O Luni;

Assaggiare una vera "pasta alla Norma";

Dare l'impressione al catanese che sia lui il centro del mondo;

Assistere almeno una volta nella vita alla tre-giorni della grande Festa di Sant'Agata.

COSA NON DEVI FARE MAI A CATANIA

Criticare Catania;

Criticare la squadra di calcio del Catania;

Ordinare un'arancina (qui si dice "arancino" o altrimenti non si dice affatto!);

Paragonare le bellezze di Catania a quelle di Palermo;

Perderti nei vicoli del quartiere San Berillo di notte;

Spostarti da/verso la stazione centrale a piedi, di sera, su un percorso lunghissimo e purtroppo popolato spesso da senzatetto e sbandati;

Ridere della statua dell'elefante (che qui è quasi sacra!);

Fotografare a tradimento i mercanti della fiera o della pescheria (potrebbero diventare anche aggressivi, se lo fai).

Catania is certainly one of the best-known and most loved cities in Sicily. Not only for the many connections that allow tourists from all over the world to arrive and move around easily (Fontanarossa Airport, the central station, the many regional buses) but also and above all for being the starting point for the itineraries to Mount Etna.

If you are in Catania you will admire its elegant baroque historic center, with the black lava that intertwines in curls and masks with the white limestone of Syracuse, and the statue of the elephant that dominates the cathedral square. You will go for a walk among monumental churches, splendid gardens, a fish market full of colors, a modern seafront and many archaeological sites. Yet to best face Catania (which not by chance competes with Palermo for the role of the most beautiful city in Sicily) you must know what is good to do and what you must never do, to best integrate into the atmosphere of the "city of the elephant". Follow our advice.

WHAT YOU SHOULD DO IN CATANIA

Without a doubt, you should visit the beautiful Cathedral dedicated to Saint Agatha;

Walk in the ancient scenery of Crociferi Street;

Admire the open-air ruins of Stesicoro Square;

Buy fresh fish at Piscarìa market;

Walk through the lively market of Fera O Luni;

Taste a real "pasta alla Norma";

Give the impression to the people of Catania that they are the center of the world;

Attend at least once in your life the three-day great Feast of Saint Agatha.

WHAT YOU SHOULD NEVER DO IN CATANIA

Criticize Catania;

Criticize Catania football team;

Order an arancina (here they say "arancino" or otherwise they don't say it at all!);

Compare the beauties of Catania to those of Palermo;

Get lost in the alleys of the San Berillo neighborhood at night;

Walk to/from the central station, in the evening, on a very long route that is unfortunately often populated by homeless people and vagrants;

Laugh at the elephant statue (which is sacred, here!);

Take unexpected photos of the merchants at the fairs/markets (they might even become aggressive if you do so).
