Pasqua Siciliana: 4 eventi - Four Sicilian Easter Events

 

I Giudei di San Fratello (Messina)

Ci sono quattro eventi particolari, tra le migliaia della Pasqua siciliana, che voglio suggerirvi per un itinerario della Settimana Santa. Ho puntato sui sentimenti che questo periodo dell'anno suscita nelle persone, religiose e non, e su come e dove si respirano le emozioni più intense. Perchè in Sicilia la religione non è solo preghiera. E la processione non è (quasi mai) solo raccoglimento. Nell'isola dei colori e degli odori, anche la Pasqua si trasforma in esperienza dei sensi. Ecco dove, in particolare.

DEVOZIONE - GIOVEDI' NOTTE - ACIREALE (CATANIA)

Se volete provare l'intensità della vera devozione durante un evento religioso legato alla Pasqua, dovete puntare la sveglia molto presto e alzarvi alle 3 di notte, ad Acireale, nel catanese. Qui infatti, nella notte tra Giovedì e Venerdì Santo si snoda una processione commovente e raccolta che trasporta la statua del Cristo Morto dalla basilica di San Pietro, in piazza Duomo, fino alla chiesa di San Salvatore, in collina, detta anche "il Calvario". Tutto avviene nel silenzio assoluto delle ultime ore della notte, poco prima che l'alba del nuovo giorno colori il cielo a oriente. Una processione ad un orario insolito, letteralmente "folle", ma seguita dall'intera città.

EMOZIONE - VENERDI - PIETRAPERZIA (ENNA)

U Signuri di li Fasci

Il Venerdì Santo, a Pietraperzia in provincia di Enna, si svolge la processione del Signore delle Fasce (foto a fianco). Un altissimo crocifisso (supera i palazzi di tre piani) viene sollevato in posizione verticale e portato tra la folla per tutto il paese, letteralmente "sostenuto" da lunghe fasce bianche. Ogni fascia indica un ex voto, una grazia chiesta e ottenuta, e dalla abilità di chi gestisce quelle fasce dipende la sicurezza nel non far cadere l'alto crocifisso durante il cammino. I fedeli, in occasione di questo evento, tornano da tutto il mondo per "reggere le fasce", alcuni compiendo viaggi di 26 ore dall'Australia o dall'Argentina per essere "a casa" nel momento della festa.

EVASIONE - VENERDI - SAN FRATELLO (MESSINA)

Quella che si svolge a San Fratello, il Venerdì Santo, è una festa fuori da ogni regola. Una vera pazzia, che coinvolge tutta la popolazione con rituali che si immergono letteralmente nel paganesimo per uscirne, però, santificati. Durante la classica processione del Cristo Morto, mentre buona parte del paese segue in religioso raccoglimento il crocifisso, alcuni figuranti "disturbatori" hanno il compito di "dissacrare" l'evento. Sono "I Giudei", secondo un antico pregiudizio che vedeva gli Ebrei come nemici del cristianesimo: compito dei "Giudei" è quello di insultare i fedeli, deridere Cristo e mancare di rispetto a tutti, anche compiendo vere e proprie acrobazie (foto grande sopra). Il vero fedele cristiano non si lascerà distrarre da tutto ciò e continuerà nelle sue preghiere.... ma fotografi e turisti possono lasciarsi affascinare dai "cattivi Giudei" i quali, tra l'altro, vestono abiti sgargianti, indossano maschere orrende, cappucci (chiamati SBIRRIJAN nel locale dialetto normanno) e una lunga coda di crini di cavallo legata al sedere!

COMMOZIONE - PRIMA DOMENICA DOPO PASQUA - ENNA

La prima domenica dopo la Pasqua, si chiudono a Enna i riti della lunga Settimana Santa iniziata con la Domenica delle Palme. In questo ultimo rito si celebra "La Spartenza", ovvero "la separazione". A dividersi per sempre sono la Madre e il Figlio. Le due statue di Gesù Risorto e della Madonna, portate a spalla da due confraternite diverse, infatti, si rincorrono e si inseguono per tutto il centro storico. Si incontreranno, infine, nei pressi del Duomo. In un lungo momento di silenzio rimangono l'una di fronte all'altro... poi Gesù si allontana, lentamente, nella commozione generale, mentre la Madre rimane a guardarlo in un estremo e doloroso addio. 

There are four special events, among the thousands of the Sicilian Easter, that I want to suggest for a Holy Week itinerary. I focused on the feelings that this time of year arouses in people, both religious and non religious, and on how and where you can feel the most intense emotions. Because in Sicily, religion is not just prayer. And the holy processions are not (almost never) just meditation. On the island of colors and smells, even Easter is transformed into an experience of the senses. Here's where, in particular. 

DEVOTION - THURSDAY NIGHT - ACIREALE (CATANIA) 

If you want to experience the intensity of true devotion during a religious event linked to Easter, you have to set your alarm clock very early and get up at 3 in the morning, in Acireale, in the Catania area. Here, in fact, on the night between Good Thursday and Good Friday, a moving and intimate procession winds its way, carrying the statue of the Dead Christ from the local Basilica of St Peter, in Cathedral square, to the church of St Salvatore, on the hill, also known as "Calvary". Everything happens in the absolute silence of the last hours of the night, just before the dawn lights up the sky colors to the east. A procession at an unusual time, literally "crazy", but followed by the entire city. 

EMOTION - FRIDAY - PIETRAPERZIA (ENNA) 

On Good Friday, in Pietraperzia in the province of Enna, the procession of the Lord of the Bands takes place (small photo above). A very tall crucifix -higher than a three-story building- is raised in a vertical position and carried through the crowd throughout the town, literally "supported" by long white bands. Each band indicates an ex voto, a grace requested and obtained, and the safety of not dropping the high crucifix during the walk depends on the skill of those who handle those bands. The devoutees, on the occasion of this event, return from all over the world to "hold the bands", some making 26-hour journeys from Australia or Argentina to be "home" at the time of the celebration. 

EXCITEMENT - FRIDAY - SAN FRATELLO (MESSINA) 

The one that takes place in San Fratello, on Good Friday, is a celebration out of any rules. A real madness, which involves the entire population with rituals that literally immerse themselves in paganism to emerge, however, sanctified. During the classic procession of the Dead Christ, while a good part of the town follows the crucifix in religious recollection, some "disturbing" figures have the task of "desecrating" the event. They are "The Jews", according to an ancient prejudice that wants the Jew people as enemies of Christianity: the task of the "Jews" is to insult the devoutees, mock Christ and disrespect everyone, even by performing real acrobatics (large photo on top). The true Christian will not be distracted by all this and will continue in his prayers.... but photographers and tourists can be fascinated by the "bad Jews" who, among other things, wear bright clothes, hideous masks, hoods (called SBIRRIJAN in the local Norman dialect) and a long horsehair tail tied to their bottoms! 

SADNESS - FIRST SUNDAY AFTER EASTER - ENNA 

On the first Sunday after Easter, the rites of the long Holy Week that began with Palm Sunday end, in the city of Enna. In this last rite, "La Spartenza" -or "the separation"- is celebrated. The ones who are separated forever are the Mother and the Son. The two statues of the Risen Jesus and the Virgin Mary, carried on the shoulders by different brotherhoods, in fact, chase each other throughout the central old town quarter. They will finally meet near the Cathedral. In a long moment of silence they remain facing each other... then, Jesus slowly moves away, amidst general emotion, while the Mother remains watching him in a final and painful farewell.
