SICILIA MODERN ART 4: VANEDDA STREET ART

C'è un piccolo paese alle pendici dell'Etna dal nome romantico, Valverde. Un luogo piccolo e spesso ignorato dal turismo di massa - ma non da quello religioso, dato che qui è presente un famoso santuario dedicato alla Madonna. Tra il santuario antichissimo (risalente addirittura al Medioevo) e la parte nuova della cittadina, comune autonomo dagli anni Cinquanta, sorge un intrico di piccole strade e vicoletti. Alcuni di questi di recente sono diventati un museo a cielo aperto. Una "expo" di arte contemporanea che imita qualcosa di più grande, i murales di Marsiglia in Francia, con garbo e umiltà.

Il progetto VANEDDA STREET ART ("vanedda" in siciliano sta per "vicolo") nasce nel 2017 grazie alla spinta culturale che ha unito insieme il governo cittadino e alcune associazioni e che ha affidato ad artisti contemporanei il compito di raccontare storie sui muri, con bombolette spray e tanta passione. 

Oggi, se passeggiate tra Via Nuova e Via Dei Portici, potrete ammirare veri e propri quadri firmati da Salvo Ligama, Alice Loma, Wadara, Salvo Mauro, Bread Pitto, Nespoon, Giuseppina Toscano e Alberto Ruce i quali ci portano dalla natura aspra siciliana ai ricordi del cinema italiano, dal mistero di volti quasi alieni fino a Madonne consacrate. Nel silenzio della quiete del paesino, ammirare queste opere è un toccasana per l'anima e per il corpo.

Non c'è fretta, non c'è ansia e ... non c'è biglietto da pagare. Una parte del progetto VANEDDA STREET ART ha superato anche i confini del quartiere ed è approdato sui muri esterni della scuola elementare di Valverde. Delle enormi gru volanti, simbolo della cultura cattolica del posto, riempiono la prospettiva insieme a uno schermo con i pixel a vista che inghiotte quasi casualmente le finestre delle aule. Fanno parte del progetto anche le scritte luminose che riproducono, sulle facciate dei condomini, antichi detti siciliani, e le panchine colorate sparse lungo il percorso.

Basta mezz'ora, una passeggiata e un caffé per godere di questo spettacolo. Possibilmente in uno di quei magnifici giorni di sole che solo la Sicilia sa regalare. L'Etna, meraviglioso quadro della natura, è sempre lì che veglia su tutto ... brontolando di tanto in tanto.

There is a small town on the slopes of Mount Etna with a romantic name, Valverde (Green Valley). A small place often ignored by mass tourism - but not by the religious one, since there is a famous sanctuary dedicated to the Virgin Mary here. Between the very ancient sanctuary (dating back to the Middle Ages) and the new part of the town, an independent municipality since the 1950s, there is a maze of small streets and alleys. Some of these have recently become an open-air museum. An "expo" of contemporary art that imitates something much bigger, the murals of Marseille in France, with grace and humility.

The VANEDDA STREET ART project ("vanedda" in Sicilian means "alley") started in 2017. It was a cultural drive that brought together the town government and some local clubs which entrusted contemporary artists with the task of telling stories on the walls, by using spray cans and a lot of passion.

So today, if you walk between Via Nuova and Via Dei Portici, you can admire real paintings

signed by artists Salvo Ligama, Alice Loma, Wadara, Salvo Mauro, Bread Pitto, Nespoon, Giuseppina Toscano and Alberto Ruce. They take us from the harsh Sicilian nature to memories of the Italian cinema, from the mystery of alien faces to consecrated Madonnas. In the quiet silence of the neighbourhood, admiring these works is a panacea for the soul and the body. There's no rush, there's no anxiety and... there's no ticket to pay! A part of the VANEDDA STREET ART project has also gone beyond the boundaries of the neighborhood and landed on the external walls of the Valverde elementary school. Huge flying cranes, a symbol of the local Catholic culture, fill the perspective of the building, together with a pixelated screen that almost randomly swallows the classrooms' windows. Also part of the project are the luminous writings that reproduce ancient Sicilian mottos on the façades of the houses, and the coloured benches scattered along the route.

Just half-an-hour of your time, a short walk and a coffee break ... and you can freely enjoy this show. Possibly in one of those magnificent sunny days that Sicily can offer. Mount Etna, a wonderful real picture by nature itself, is always there, behind you, watching over everything ... . And grumbling from time to time.

Ceramica a Paratissima. Un'arte molto siciliana

Il programma di "Paratissima 2017" di oggi, 4 novembre, è molto ricco. Ricco soprattutto di attività pratiche legate alla pittura a olio, alle illustrazioni editoriali, al cinema con i cortometraggi e alla street photography. Ma è molto interessante, per noi che la osserviamo dalla Sicilia, l'attività prevista per questo pomeriggio dalle 15 in poi:  Dalla terra alla forma, dimostrazione teorico-pratica

La ceramica per noi siciliani è come il pane.

Un'arte molto antica, sicuramente conosciuta da Greci e Romani (le fornaci per cuocere la creta si trovano ovunque) ma sviluppata e potenziata dagli invasori arabi tra l'850 e l'anno 1000. Grazie alla loro creatività si sono sviluppate sull'isola tre zone di produzione di bellissime ceramiche che non si fanno concorrenza, data la differenza di stile ugualmente interessante. Una è Santo Stefano di Camastra (Messina, foto a sinistra)  che utilizza colori 

vivaci e molto contrastati; l'altra e ben più famosa è Caltagirone (Catania), dalle tinte più cupe ma eleganti; infine Sciacca (Agrigento) nuova arrivata ma originale nei disegni e nell'uso delle tinte.

TERRA CERAMICA E ARTE è invece un'associazione torinese gestita da due giovani artigiani, Elena D'Oria e Giorgio Fasano che sicuramente sta dando un'impronta moderna e innovativa al modo di cuocere la terra. La loro ceramica -in mostra a Paratissima 2017- diventa gioielli unici e oggettistica un po' aliena ma dirompente ... nel panorama del nuovo che avanza.

The "Paratissima 2017" program of today, November 4, is very rich. It is particularly rich in workshops of oil paintings, editorial illustrations, short films and street photography. Ceramic for us Sicilians is like bread.

A very ancient art, certainly known by Greeks and Romans (the ovens for baking clay are found everywhere, here) but developed and enhanced by the Arabs between years 850 and 1000. Thanks to their creativity they developed on the island three great production areas of beautiful ceramics that do not compete with each other, given the difference of styles all equally interesting. One is in Santo Stefano di Camastra (Messina, photo above on the left) that uses lively and very contrasted colours; the other and more famous is Caltagirone (Catania), with the most dark but still elegant colors; finally Sciacca (Agrigento) is a new entry but very original in designs and in the use of the colours.

TERRA CERAMICA E ARTE is an association set in Turin run by two young artisans, Elena D'Oria and Giorgio Fasano who are definitely giving a modern and innovative way to how to cook the clay. Their ceramics -exposed at Paratissima 2017- become unique jewelery both alien but artistically "blasting" ... in the new era to come.

Beddamatrisantissima! SUPERSTITION a Paratissima!

Superstizione... ne sappiamo bene qualcosa, noi siciliani. Quasi tutti i nostri riti, laici ma anche cattolici, si basano sulla superstizione. Se la processione di Sant'Agata non sale la collina in una sola corsa, l'anno sarà pieno di disgrazie! Il Pupo Siciliano dipinto sul carretto o sulla Moto Ape in tempi moderni protegge dall'invidia degli altri! Prima di entrare nella casa di un malato si deve sputare tre volte... e così via. Per difendersi spesso si mescola il sacro e il profano, come l'invocazione alla Madonna (Bedda Matri Santissima!) esclamata mentre si fanno le corna! E' un mondo particolare, quello della superstizione, e non di rado la paura che esprime diventa arte, da noi, come ricordano i mascheroni barocchi di Acireale e Noto che "tengono lontano il male dalla casa". 

E la superstizione diventa arte anche nell'evento che stiamo seguendo per voi: PARATISSIMA 2017. Duemila-diciassette. Tredicesima edizione. Apertura nella settimana "dei Santi e dei Morti". E chi più ne ha più ne metta! La sfida alla malasorte è aperta.

O meglio, si apre domani -1° novembre- con la Conferenza Stampa che darà ufficialmente il "via" alla manifestazione o meglio, per usare le parole stesse di Paratissima, all' << evento artistico complesso e variegato che si propone di avvicinare il pubblico all'arte attraverso un ricco calendario di workshop, presentazioni e laboratori basati sul concetto di "learning by doing" e di creare opportunità concrete per i giovani talenti dell'arte contemporanea con progetti curati, premi e iniziative oltreconfine sviluppate a Skopje, Cagliari, Lisbona, Napoli.>>. E sarà interessante vedere in quanti e quali modi gli artisti presenti esporranno la loro idea di superstizione, un feeling talmente insito nell'animo primitivo umano da sopravvivere a qualsiasi culto religioso, perché ovunque nel mondo esiste la paura del male e la scaramanzia che lo tiene lontano.  Come disse Eduardo De Filippo, e come ci ricorda il sito dell'evento: "Essere superstiziosi è da ignoranti, ma non esserlo ... be', porta male!". Superstition ... we know something about that, we Sicilians. Almost all of our rituals, both laic and  Catholic, are based on superstition. If the procession of the Saint does not climb the hill in one single race, the year will be full of misfortunes! The Sicilian Puppet painted on the cart or on the Moto Ape car in modern times protects from other people's envy ! Before entering a sick person's home you have to spit three times ... and so on. In order to defend oneself, you often mix the sacred and the profane, like the invocation to the Virgin Mary (Bedda Matri Santissima!)  while you touch wood! It is a particular world, that of superstition, and it's not rare to see those fears becoming real art, here, as showed by the baroque stone masks of Acireale and Noto that "keep away the evil from the house."

And superstition also becomes art  in the event that we are reporting  for you: PARATISSIMA 2017. Two thousand-seventeen. Thirteenth edition. Opening in the week of "Saints and the Dead". And the more you put it on! The challenge to bad luck is open.

Or rather, it opens tomorrow, November 1, with the Press Conference that will officially give the "way" to the event or rather, to use the words of Paratissima, to the << complex and varied artistic event that aims to bring the public through art with a rich calendar of workshops, presentations and classes based on the concept of "learning by doing" and to create concrete opportunities for young talents of contemporary art with well-designed projects, awards and over-the-top initiatives developed in Skopje, Cagliari, Lisbon, Naples. >>. And it will be interesting to see in how many ways the artists will expose their idea of ​​superstition, a feeling so embedded in the primitive human soul to survive any religious worship, because everywhere in the world there is the fear of evil and the magic actions that keep it away. As Eduardo De Filippo said, and how  the official Paratissima site  reminds us: "To be superstitious is for ignorant people, but not to be ... well, it gives misfortune!" See you in Paratissima!
