A chiazza 'e motti --Growing Smarter in Sicily

Prima che "Babbo Natale" e la "Befana" entrassero nella tradizione dei doni siciliana, i bambini dell'isola aspettavano con trepidazione il 2 novembre, Festa dei Morti, perché in quella notte le anime dei loro cari defunti portavano loro in dono giocattoli o dolci, o entrambi. Oggi questa tradizione si sta stupidamente perdendo, in favore dell'inutile Halloween, ma se ascoltate "gli anziani" ... ma anche i quarantenni ... potrete capire la magia di quella notte.

I bambini si infilavano sotto le coperte e aspettavano, occhi sbarrati e orecchie ben aperte, per sentire "i spiddi" (gli spiriti) che portavano loro quei doni. Ogni rumore era rassicurante, voleva dire che un Morto stava entrando in casa a portar doni ... il silenzio invece indicava "niente regali", e quindi che si era stati "cattivi". L'innocenza dell'infanzia finiva bruscamente quando qualche smaliziato fratello maggiore, o cugino, o vicino di casa ti svelava A CHIAZZA 'E MOTTI (la piazza dei morti). Ti prendevano da parte e ti dicevano:

- La conosci a Chiazza e Motti?

- No - diceva il più piccolo, incantato.

- U patri accatta, a matri ammuccia, u figghiu ammucca OVVERO il padre compra (il dono), la mamma lo nasconde e il bambino ci casca.

Dopo questa rivelazione, di solito, erano pianti e grandi delusioni. Ma il trauma si superava presto e, una volta scoperto l'inganno dei genitori, ci si sentiva adulti, arrivati, in grado di mantenere segreti importanti. L'infanzia era persa per sempre, ma si otteneva l'orgoglio di sentirsi grandi, anche se si avevano meno di 12 anni!

Ancora oggi, in Sicilia, quando un bambino si dimostra furbo, intelligente, sveglio e bravo si dice di lui "Chissu a canusci bbona a Chiazza 'e Motti" (questo conosce bene la piazza dei morti, questo non lo inganna nessuno). Quindi se sentite questa frase rivolta a voi, siatene fieri. E' un  gran complimento. Ma finché potete,  se avete figli, INSEGNATE loro le antiche tradizioni, insegnate loro la magia "dei Morti", dei doni portati dagli spiriti dei parenti e non dalle zucche vuote .. e lasciateli sognare finché è possibile. Verrà il giorno che scopriranno a Chiazza 'e Motti per conto loro.

Before "Santa Claus" and the "Witches" entered in the tradition of Sicilian gifts, the children of the island were waiting with trepidation for November 2, the "Day of the Dead", because on that night the souls of their deceased relatives would bring them toys. sweets, or both. Today, this tradition is stupidly going to die, in favor of the useless foreign Halloween, but if you listen to "seniors" ... but also to people in their forties ... you will understand the magic of that night.

The children would stay under the sheets, staring eyes and ears open, waiting for "the spiddi" (ghosts) who would carry those gifts. Every noise was reassuring, it meant that a Dead was entering the house to leave toys somewhere ... the silence instead indicated "no gifts", and then the child had been "bad." The innocence of childhood ended abruptly when some smart elder brother, or cousin, or neighbour revealed A CHIAZZA 'E MOTTI (the square of the dead). They took you aside and said:

- Do you know the Chiazza 'e Motti?

- No - the innocent child said .

- U patri accatta, a matri ammuccia, u figghiu ammucca. THAT IS: father buys (the gift), mother hides it and the dupe child will be fooled!

After this revelation, usually, there were weeping and great disappointments. But the trauma was soon forgotten and, once discovered the deception of parents, the children would feel adults, grown up, able to keep important secrets. Childhood was lost forever, but ... wow!! ... the pride of feeling great, even if you were younger than 12!

Even today, in Sicily, when a child shows a smart, intelligent, alert and good personality he/she is said to be  "one who knows the Chiazza 'e Motti" (one who is familiar with the square of the dead, one who is not easy to cheat!). So if you hear this sentence about you, be proud. It 'a great compliment. But as long as you can, if you have children, TEACH THEM their ancient traditions,  the magic "of the Dead", the gifts brought by the spirits of relatives and not by empty pumpkins .. and let them dream. The day will come, when they'll discover that Chiazza 'e Motti themselves.
