Le stanze dello Scirocco - Cool Underground Rooms

Lo Scirocco è il vento caldo africano che porta sulla Sicilia afa e umidità alle stelle. Quando soffia lo Scirocco si boccheggia e non si trova riparo. Fu così che i nobili palermitani, a cavallo tra il 16° e 18° secolo, presero l'abitudine di costruire -sotto i propri palazzi- delle camere sotterranee. Normalmente venivano scavate direttamente nelle fondamenta, nella nuda roccia, e poi collegate con i piani superiori da lunghe scalinate. Dentro queste grotte-cantine, essi venivano a rifugiarsi nelle calde giornate di Scirocco per godersi il fresco e non di rado erano ben arredate e provviste anche di acqua corrente, di artistiche fontane e di sedili di pietra.  

Le camere dello Scirocco ritrovate a Palermo sono: quelle di palazzo Colluzio, quelle di palazzo Marchesi e quella di vico degli Orfani, conosciuta come Stanza dei Beati Paoli. Al tema delle "stanze dello Scirocco" fu dedicato anche un film del 1998 per la regia di Maurizio Sciarra .

The Scirocco is the hot African wind that brings on Sicily heat and moisture, especially in the summer but also in other seasons. When  the Scirocco blows, the people gasp and find no shelter. So the rich families of Palermo, between the 16th and 18th centuries, had the habit of building large underground rooms in their elegant palaces. Normally these rooms were dug directly into the foundations, in the bare rock, and then connected with the upper floors by long staircases. Inside these caves-cellars, the nobles could have some relief and enjoy the cool in the  days of Scirocco, having fun too, since the rooms were well furnished and provided with food and water, with artistic fountains and stone benches.

The "Rooms of the Scirocco" found in Palermo are those of Colluzio palace, those under Marchesi palace and those in the Vico degli Orfani, known as Room of the Beati Paoli. To the "Rooms of the Scirocco" was also dedicated a 1998 film directed by Maurizio Sciarra .
